One of the most famous rappers in the world, Kanye West (recently called Ye), has released his long-awaited album: Donda 2. But there’s a difference… It won’t be available on Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube or other mainstream platforms.
It so happens that last year Ye launched a device that works as a kind of MP3, called Stem Player, and your new release will only be available there. According to Ye, the measure is a way of protesting the abuses that big platforms commit with artists, returning only 12% of what the industry earns.
This dissatisfaction was also punctuated by other singers such as Taylor Swift, who began to work on re-recording their albums with the aim of achieving better commercialization.
“Some say I am the only one capable of making this change. As the leading innovator in music for the past 20 years, I put my own work into changing that. I won by not being afraid. We won because we have supporters who have invested hard-to-earn money in my vision of freedom,” said Kanye West.
Since the announcement, Stem Player has sold 8,000 units, generating approximately $2 million dollars. The device also has a simplified remix feature.
To prove the success of Donda, released last year, the album was Spotify’s second biggest and reached 100 million plays in just one day!
