An Idea of You was the release I was most looking forward to this month (along with Bridgerton, Of course). The film premiered today on Prime Video. It’s a novel, based on a successful book, that has a much better production and script than most. And also a luminous presence from Anne Hathaway in the main role. I dare say that this must be among the actress’s best performances. I loved it!
The story is as follows: Solène (Anne Hathaway) is a 40-year-old separated woman with a 17-year-old daughter. Since she separated, Solène has no longer felt comfortable living new romantic adventures. However, her life has a turning point. This happens when, at the request of her ex-husband, Dan (Reid Scott), she goes to accompany her daughter to the Coachella Music Festival. There she bumps into (and is very impressed) by the 24-year-old star of the most famous boy band of all time: Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine). But when the two fall in love, there are several complicating factors for them to be able to move their relationship forward.
What did I find?
An Idea of You It has been labeled a romantic comedy. Of course I laughed at some moments, but some specks fell into my eyes at others, lol. But I think it’s much more accurate to call it a novel. Best of all, the script takes these two’s love story seriously. Of course, you’ve seen plenty of romance movies about older women and younger men. I myself have already written an article about this – see here. But there is a surprising delicacy here. From the moment the two meet until the last scene. And there is a very present sensuality. There are bed scenes, but I warn you that none are as sexy as the first kiss.
This, of course, is largely due to Anne Hathaway’s performance. You fully believe that a man of any age will fall in love with her. She has a magnetic performance, with her wide smile and her eyes always ready to shed tears. Impossible to take your eyes off her. With this, it is necessary to highlight the presence and talent of Nicholas Galitzine, which goes much further than a so-called impersonation of Harry Styles. He manages to carry his character to her height. The chemistry between the two is sensational – and the exchange of glances is even hot, lol.
But there is more…
But An Idea of You it also touches on thorny subjects. It talks about choices, about internal and external pressure to move forward with a great love. Also about the need for approval, about the fear of the unknown, about feeling loved and desired. And of course, the problem with everyone’s disrespect for the fact that she’s an older woman with a younger guy. In several situations, it is clear that if the roles were reversed, acceptance would be complete. But as the woman is older, people have to make jokes, they have to tone it down. It seems almost offensive to see a 40-year-old woman happy, as is said at a certain point in the film.
And this is another important point in the script. How social media and gossip sites do their best to dissect and destroy. It’s easy to see that this must have been one of the points that attracted Anne Hathaway (also a producer) to the project. After all, a few years ago she herself was a victim of internet haters. But time passes, and Anne has in mind An Idea in You a moment of glory. And it gave us a delicious romance that makes you want to watch it for much longer. I would love to see what would have happened after that sensational final smile.
