Company that owns ChatGPT and Microsoft launch million-dollar fund for education about artificial intelligence.
In its new movement to combat the spread of false images, the OpenAIowner of ChatGPTlaunched today (7) a tool that identifies whether an image was produced using DALL-E 3, its own image generator from texts.
According to OpenAI, the new tool can detect images generated by artificial intelligence with 98% accuracy, but small changes in the images are enough to confuse the system. Although accuracy is slightly lower when images are captured by screenshot or cropped, correct identification is still made in most cases.
Despite this, the tool may have difficulties in specific conditions, such as changing image colors. The company plans to resolve these issues by opening the role to external researchers. It is also worth noting that the tool can get confused when evaluating AI images created by competitors.
Even with these obstacles, checking whether an image was created by artificial intelligence can be a simpler task than carrying out a similar analysis for texts also created by AI. In January last year, OpenAI launched a tool to detect text created by AI, which had difficulty identifying content generated by bots almost 75% of the time. In the current case, the percentage of difficulty decreases considerably, considering that only in 0.5% of cases the tool incorrectly detects images not generated by AI as if they were from DALL-E 3.
The launch of this tool comes in response to the increase in fake images and AI-generated content, especially during the election campaign period. Politicians in Brazil and the United States express concern about voters’ exposure to this type of image.
To address this challenge, OpenAI has teamed up with Microsoft e Adobe to create content credentials for images on the internet. Furthermore, the company created by Bill Gates and the owner of ChatGPT launched an educational fund worth US$2 million (approximately R$10 million at current prices) on artificial intelligence.
