This Sunday is Mother’s Day, and I was here thinking about what tip to give you to watch it with yours. I’ve made several collections for the date in past years, but then I thought about this new film by Brooke Shields, which premiered today on Netflix, The Mother of the Bride (I’ll see it today). In it, Brooke is the mother of the bride who discovers on the wedding day that the groom’s father is her ex. And, obviously, this leads to a lot of confusion, especially because their story was not well resolved. Then I remembered different types of mothers from movies that show a wedding. There’s something for everyone, lol.
The mother who is more interested in fighting with the father – Ticket to Paradise – Globoplay
Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) decides to get married impulsively in Bali. However, the young woman’s unexpected decision makes her parents, a divorced couple (George Clooney and Julia Roberts), decide to hurriedly travel to the island. The two apparently hate each other. But they decide to unite. Their goal is to try to prevent their daughter from making the same mistake they made when they got married 25 years ago. This is when sabotage and not-so-successful plans begin. The ex-couple does everything to avoid their daughter’s hasty marriage. This commitment could end up bringing the two together again. Julia and George’s chemistry is worth the film.
The mother who doesn’t know who the bride’s father is – Oh mama – Star Plus/ Globoplay
1999, on the Greek island of Kalokairi. Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is about to get married and, without knowing who her father is, sends invitations to Sam Carmichael (Pierce Brosnan), Harry Bright (Colin Firth) and Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgard). They come from different parts of the world, willing to meet the woman of their lives: Donna (Meryl Streep), Sophie’s mother. When they arrive Donna is surprised, having to make up excuses to not reveal who Sophie’s father is. There’s also the sequel, which I also love, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again.
The mother who does everything for her daughter – Steel Flowers – Amazon/Apple TV/Claro Vídeo (for rent and purchase)
Shelby Eatenton (Julia Roberts) is about to marry a rich lawyer. To prepare for the wedding, she goes with her mother, M’Lynn (Sally Field), to Truvy Jones’ (Dolly Parton) hair salon. Knowing that because of the party she will have extra work, Truvy immediately hired Annelle Dupuy (Daryl Hannah), so that they can both handle the work. The fact that she is diabetic means that Shelby knows in advance that having a child is also a huge risk to her health. Therefore, when months later she announces that she is pregnant, M’Lynn begins to fear that her daughter’s body will not support the pregnancy. Despite the risk, Shelby decides to go ahead with the pregnancy.
The mother who wants to organize everything – Greek wedding – Netflix/ Star Plus
Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos) is 30 years old, Greek and works in her family’s restaurant. Her father’s dream is to see her married to a Greek, but she expects something more from life. With great difficulty, Toula manages to convince her father to pay for computer classes, as a way of improving her work. During the course, she meets and falls in love with Ian Miller (John Corbett), and reciprocates. However, Ian is American and because of that they decide to keep their relationship a secret. But soon they are discovered, triggering a process of acceptance for Ian, so that he can adapt to Greek traditions for marriage. The film had two sequels – I always enjoy it.
The mother who hates her future daughter-in-law – To Sogra – MAX
After years of searching for her prince charming, Charlotte Cantilini (Jennifer Lopez) falls in love with Kevin Fields (Michael Vartan). The problem is his mother, Viola (Jane Fonda), who recently lost her position as anchor at a national newspaper. After losing her job, Viola fears losing her son and to avoid this she decides to disrupt the couple’s plans as much as possible. Jane and Jennifer’s scenes are really fun.
The mother who tries to buy her future daughter-in-law – Filthy Rich – Prime Video
A cute film. Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) is an economics professor in the United States and has been dating Nick Young (Henry Golding) for some time. One fine day, Nick invites Rachel to go to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. But he forgets to tell his girlfriend that, as heir to a fortune, he is one of the most eligible bachelors in the place. And that puts RAchel in the sights of other candidates and Nick’s mother (Michelle Yeoh), who disapproves of the relationship.
