But now we know more details about one of the most famous fights on set. It was the one that included Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy during the filming of Mad Max: Fury Roadfrom 2015.
The story is told in the book Blood, Sweat and Chrome, by Kyle Richards, which is now being released in the United States. It’s really about the two-decade journey to make the movie happen. It has over 130 interviews with cast and crew. This includes Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, and director George Miller. But of course, what caught the most attention was the information about the famous fight between Tom and Charlize.
The fight
According to the book, the problems started because of Tom Hardy’s constant delays in filming. And it even broke out on a day when a scene was scheduled to take place at 8 am. Charlize, who is famous for her professionalism, was there on time. Camera operator Mark Goellnicht recalled the occasion. “Charlize sat there on time knowing that Tom would never make it at 8. He was famous for never being on time in the morning.” Tom showed up on set three hours later!
According to Goellnitch, when she saw him, Charlize jumped out of the truck and started yelling at him. “Fine this motherfucker $100,000 for every minute he made this whole team wait! What disrespect!” But Tom, even wrong, didn’t let it go. He came up to her and said aggressively, “What did you say to me?” Goellnicht remembers that the moment was very tense. “Charlize felt threatened, and I think that was the turning point on the set. That day, she sent producer Denise DiNovi to the set in Namibia to avoid further conflict. Charlize herself spoke about the situation. “There came a time when things got out of hand. And the feeling was that if there was a female producer there, she could even things out. Because I didn’t feel safe.”
Tom Hardy didn’t shy away from talking about the situation. “In hindsight, I was out of my mind in a lot of ways. The pressure on both of us was enormous. What she needed was someone better, maybe a more experienced partner than me… I’d like to think that now that I’m older and uglier, it could be better.”

Despite all this tension, the two continued. And the film turned out to be a huge success. It made 374 million at the worldwide box office. It was nominated for 10 Oscars, and won 6. Charlize won the Critics Choice and MTV Movie Awards. In my opinion, she was the best male and female performance that year.
