Upon reaching more than 3 million probable cases of dengue, according to the Arbovirus Panel of the Ministry of Health, Brazil has never been so susceptible to the transmitting mosquito, Aedes Aegypti. To contribute to the fight against the disease, Insidera Brazilian company that is a reference in functional fashion, launched the Tech T-Shirt Mosquito Repeller, a repellent t-shirt with innovative technology designed to ward off these insects.
The textile technology, developed at Insider’s request, consists of treating the fabric with permethrin, a synthetic version of a natural compound found in chrysanthemum flowers. This application, non-toxic to humans, offers repellent and insecticidal properties, acting on the nervous system of mosquitoes.
The benefits of the repellent t-shirt are noticeable at a distance of up to 20 centimeters from the fabric, reducing insect landings on clothing and the surrounding area by up to 90%. The active ingredient acts to repel the mosquito’s approach, causing irritability to the “more stubborn” insects that insist on landing on the treated pieces, and causing a paralyzing effect if contact persists.
The use of permethrin-treated clothing is part of the United States Department of Defense’s vector control measures, including for military purposes, according to Yuri Gricheno, CEO of Insider.
“We present this technology to the Brazilian market as an ally in the fight against dengue. After many studies, we managed to arrive at this product, which achieved the balance between comfort and protection in a smart fabric,” he explains.
Insider was founded in 2017 by Yuri Gricheno and Carol Matsuse, with the purpose of bringing significant change to the fashion industry, centered on three pillars: technology, design and sustainability. Its products are developed with timeless aesthetics and greater durability, generating less consumption and using fewer natural resources. About to celebrate seven years of founding, Insider is considered the largest essential clothing brand in Brazilian e-commerce, with more than half a million customers in more than 40 countries. It has previously distinguished itself in providing textile solutions for public health during the Covid-19 pandemic, with the production of antiviral masks.
“When we launched the product, our supply for a month was sold out in just three hours. Without a doubt, it was an important moment in our history and we want to continue to be attentive to the demands of society, with increasingly functional pieces for everyday life”, reports Carol Matsuse, COO of Insider.
Other properties
By repelling the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, the Tech T-Shirt Mosquito Repeller also helps combat other diseases transmitted by this vector, such as Zika, Chikungunya and Urban Yellow Fever. Furthermore, the piece is effective against the Anopheles mosquito, which transmits Malaria; the Palha mosquito, which causes Leishmaniasis; and Estrela ticks, vectors of Spotted Fever and Lime Disease.
Recommended for casual use in urban areas with a high incidence of diseases transmitted by Aedes Aegypti, the repellent t-shirt can also be used for outdoor activities, such as traveling, gardening and camping. Made from modal fabric, with natural and certified fibers, it offers softness superior to cotton and has UV40 protection against UVA and UVB solar rays.
Care
The advantage of using a t-shirt with a repellent finish is that it is not necessary to apply and reapply sprays or other types of lotions, because the repellent effect of Insider pieces resists up to 50 domestic washes. However, it is important to note that unprotected body areas still require the use of conventional repellents.
