The Reação Institute, foundedfor more than 20 years by judoka and Olympic medalist, Flávio Canto, and some friends, It began as a judo school for underprivileged communities, mainly. Currently, the program works with judo, jiu-jitsu, education, meditation, and various initiatives, seeking the development of students from four years old to young people and adults.
With headquarters in Rocinha and 12 centers in five states, the organization’s strategy is to always be very close to a community. More than 20 thousand people have already been impacted by the project, over its 20 year history; 300 students were awarded scholarships in 2023; and more than 3 thousand medals have been won in the last five years alone.
In an interview with Adnews, the project’s CEO, José Cândido Muricy, pointed out that Reação has a methodology called ‘Caminho Potente’, focused on follow the lives and development of students, from the age of four, until they get their first job. The path is based on two structuring programs. Furthermore, education is a fundamental part of the project.
- Future Reaction: they start doing judo, education and meditation;
- Olympic Reaction: At the age of ten, when they have some aptitude, children go to high-performance sports, where around 5% go to the Olympics, but always combining high performance and education.
The Institute seeks not only to train athletes, but also qualified citizens for life and the job market. Likewise, many young people who participated in the project became lawyers, engineers, Olympic and world champions, and even speakers, teachers and coordinators at the Reação Institute itself.

“Along the way, we evolve and we understand the importance of education. Therefore, today we work on education and sport together. Students cannot just do judo, everyone must be enrolled in schools and studying. Judo and jiu-jitsu are a way to hook these children, there is no easier way than sport to capture children and lead them on a path of transformation. We really want to transform lives”, said Muricy.
Furthermore, the organization works a lot on meditation. Children naturally arrive in a state of escape or defense, due to the area in which they live, so they have a moment to relax, and thus better absorb the content.
Other programs also support children and young people in various processes, such as ‘Conecta’, ‘Reação Com Elas’ and ‘Scholarships’.
- Connect: Its purpose is to facilitate access to opportunities in the job market for young people aged 16 and over and family members who have a connection with the Institute. It promotes training workshops, practical experiences, educational workshops and inclusion in the job market. In addition to a partnership with Senac.
- Reaction to them: strengthening bonds and monitoring women who are agents of transformation in the lives of Reação students, through weekly meetings that promote deeper understanding of various topics focused on self-knowledge, awareness and collaboration between them. Each edition features around 30 women aged 18 and over.
- Scholarship : seeks to expand access to education in private schools, language courses and universities, with the support of sponsors and in partnership with private institutions. The selection takes place following some criteria.

Instituto Reação presents its ‘Reação Consultoria’ program, which seeks to bring socio-emotional development into companies, based on the expertise acquired over the years in dealing with human behavior in the organization. With an approach focused on transactional analysis, the program helps companies invest in their teams, promoting not only organizational growth, but also positive social impact.
“Each branch of the Institute has a social worker and a psychologist, and with this we gain experience on human behavior. We thought about taking this knowledge into companies, also as a way of helping with Reação’s sustainability. In other words, improve programs and help companies. Our difference is focused on transactional analysis”, highlights the CEO of Instituto Reação.
Muricy also highlights that the expansion of the project has already occurred, and now the focus is on solidifying advances and improving existing programs. In this way, Instituto Reação continues to transform lives and seek new ways to promote development.
