Amazon’s Project Kuiper will provide extensive coverage, with Sky responsible for sales and customer service.
Vrio, the group that owns the brands Sky e DirecTVsigned a partnership with Amazon to provide satellite internet in distant areas of Brazil, including the Amazon.
Sky Brasil is in charge of selling the satellite internet service from Amazon’s Project Kuiper, which is launching the satellites that will provide the connection, with the expectation of starting to sell the service to the public in the second quarter of 2025. Sky will handle antenna sales, billing and customer service.
Kuiper’s network will have 3,326 satellites, offering coverage across the country, without geographic restrictions. In addition, the service will also be sold by DirecTV Latin America, also owned by Vrio, in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay.
This partnership between Sky and Amazon will compete with other satellite internet services, such as Elon Musk’s Starlink, Clear, HeyTelebras, Viasat, Vivo and more.
“We at Project Kuiper visited remote communities with difficulties connecting to the internet, and we were able to witness the importance of connectivity in people’s quality of life, and the many opportunities that this tool can create”, said Bruno Henriques, Business Development leader Latam for Amazon’s Project Kuiper.
The first Kuiper satellites were launched in October 2023. Amazon expects the first customers to be served by the end of 2024, with half of the satellite network expected to be in orbit by July 2026.
