Created by Asia, the play features the participation of some of the biggest names in tennis in the country
Engie launched the “The Weight of Inequality” campaign, with the aim of drawing attention to all types of prejudice and the need to equalize opportunities between men and women on the tennis courts and in everyday life.
Created by Asia, the piece features written words, such as misogyny, intolerance, machismo and inequality, in reference to the issues faced by female athletes on a daily basis. The film also shows a racket 20 times heavier than the one used in matches, referencing the campaign’s theme. The action features the participation of athletes Bia Haddad, Carol Meligeni, Laura Pigossi, Ingrid Martins and Luisa Stefani.
“Engie is a tennis sponsor and we realize that the challenge for tennis players goes far beyond the courts. That’s why we decided to run this campaign, to debate gender inequality in sport. In the company, we also invest in female inclusion and we have a global goal of achieving gender parity in leadership positions by 2030”, says Gil Maranhão, director of communications and corporate social responsibility at Engie Brasil.
The racket was displayed at the entrance to the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup, the main international team competition in women’s tennis, which honored Billie Jean King, one of the greatest athletes of all time. The athlete began challenging gender-based clothing rules in the 1950s and became a pioneer in the fight for equal prizes in sports competitions.
“The words written around the racket are very strong and heavy, which match the weight that we women have to face all the time, not just in sport. The campaign gave us the opportunity to talk a little about our experiences as women, related those words”, says tennis player Carol Meligeni.
