The Batman, the new Batman movie, hits the big screen this week, on March 3rd. After more than 7 individual films, Bruce Wayne is already one of the most iconic figures in pop culture and everyone knows the story of the billionaire orphan who uses its resources to fight crime in Gotham City.
Still, the new film directed by Matt Reeves promises to bring some news compared to previous productions. Starting with the casting choice, with the decision that surprised everyone more than 2 years ago: Robert Pattinson, the star who starred in the Twilight saga at the beginning of the last decade, is the new Batman.
Even though many elements of the story are still under lock and key, interviews and promotional videos already give clues about the film. So that no one gets lost on what to expect from the movie, we’ve separated some information that may be important or worth mentioning.
But first, check out the main trailer for The Batman:
The world’s greatest detective
The biggest curiosity of all is probably what the new Batman will be like. Although the hero is remarkable, each version of him has its own particularity and traits. With Robert Pattinson, it will hardly be different, especially considering the director’s lines in interviews.
Apparently, the version of Pattinson in The Batman will represent the bat man in a more human way, better addressing his trauma and especially his anger. Matt Reeves also spoke a little about his inspirations for creating the personality of the protagonist in the film, even mentioning Kurt Cobain, lead singer of Nirvana, among them.
In addition to all this, the film will also show more about the more detective side of Batman. Having already been like a detective story, the film will tackle a facet of the hero that has never been more explored in theaters, yet he is known as the greatest detective in the world. Some of these elements can be seen in the trailers themselves.
Villains in The Batman
The dark knight movies have always had a pretty big focus on antagonists. Since the first film, in 1989, when Jack Nicholson was chosen to play the Joker, there has been curiosity about who the enemies will be and who will play them. The main ones here are the Riddler and the Penguin.
Paul Dano (Black Blood, The Usual Suspects) is chosen to play Edward Nashton (or Nigma), the Riddler. With a revamped look, with inspirations from real-life serial killers, such as the famous “Zodiac”, this version of the character looks raw and brutal than the one of Jim Carrey who appeared in Batman Forever.
Although we don’t know much about the story behind the Riddler in The Batman, some commercials reveal that the traumas that make up the villain come from childhood, with images of him as a child having already been released. In addition, a plan involving the city’s plumbing must also be formulated by the villain during the plot, as in the comic “Batman: Earth 1”.
The Penguin, on the other hand, should develop the more urban side of the hero, being a villain linked to the Gotham City mafia. We also already know that other well-known characters from the Batman mythology are in the film, such as Carmine Falcone, the city’s underworld bigwig. The Penguin, it seems, will be a henchman of the city’s crime boss and will rise during the plot.
Comic Book Inspirations
As might be expected, The Batman draws some inspiration from the character’s source material. Among the stories cited is Ego, a lesser-known comic that addresses Bruce Wayne’s inner conflicts and his moral dilemmas regarding his double life as Batman.
Another story worth mentioning and that Matt Reeves has already made clear he used as a basis for the script is The Long Halloween. Being one of the most classic of its history, it tackles both the aforementioned detective side and the stories connected to Gotham’s mob, with Carmine Falcone being one of the main antagonists here.
It is worth mentioning again Earth 1, one of the comics that recounts the origin of the bat man. In this comic, the villain is also the Riddler, but other important elements that make up it are worth mentioning. Among the highlights here is Alfred, who is a little more aggressive than his other versions, something that should be taken into account.
Other films that inspired The Batman
The director also gave statements reporting some works that served as the basis for directing the new adventure of the bat man. Among them are some Oscar-winning classics such as The Silence of the Lambs, from 1991, which won the award for best picture of that year, or Chinatown, from 1974, which won best original screenplay.
The style of film noir, very striking in the first half of the last century, is also present in The Batman, even to give the air of a detective film that the production wants to convey. In addition, slasher films, one of the most striking subgenres of horror, also served as inspiration for Reeves.
The Bat and The Cat
And of course, you can’t talk about this movie without talking about Catwoman. The character returns to the screens after 10 years, this time played by Zoe Kravitz. Although her role in the plot has not been so revealed so far, we already know that the classic character will help the bat man and maybe even become a romantic partner of the hero in the course of the story.
