Four units were adapted, with expansion to 32 units across Brazil by the end of 2024.
A Marsone of the largest food companies in the world, and Arcos Dorados, operator of the McDonald’s in 20 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, they came together for an initiative that makes McDonald’s restaurants more welcoming to families with pets, opening pet-friendly areas in units throughout Brazil. This action is aligned with the objectives of both companies in relation to animal welfare and the promotion of memorable and convenient experiences for their consumers.
Currently, McDonald’s already has four pet-friendly units: on Av. Henrique Schaumann 80 and Av. Bernardino de Campos 307, in São Paulo, on Rua Cândido Bueno 476, in Jaguariúna, and on Asa Norte, in Brasília. The expectation is that by the end of 2024, there will be 32 pet-friendly units in six Brazilian states: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, Pernambuco and the Federal District. This initiative is connected to the company’s ESG strategy, called Recipe of the Future, which seeks to offer the best experience for families and communities around restaurants.
“We are always looking to improve the customer experience in our units and this includes looking at everything that can expand the integration of all types of families. Pets are part of many people’s reality today and, when we launch the partnership with Mars Petcare, the idea is to build integrative and welcoming spaces for these families to enjoy good times with their pets”, says Mariana Scalzo, Communications Director at Arcos Dorados Brazilian Division.
According to a study carried out by Mars this year, 70% of families that own dogs and cats consider them part of the family. To ensure that these families are well received, the selection of restaurants, the adaptation of areas and the preparation of employees were carefully planned by the companies, thinking about the comfort and safety of pets, their families and all customers.
“Encouraging the creation of pet-friendly spaces addresses the biggest cause supported by Mars Petcare, which is the fight against animal abandonment. We want more and more cities and businesses to recognize the importance of supporting pet-related programs and encouraging responsible ownership. We work to ensure that all pets have the opportunity to grow up in a healthy and happy home by building more spaces where they are accepted,” says Sarah Bonadio, Director of Corporate Affairs at Mars Petcare.
Led by Mars Petcare, the initiative is part of the Better Cities for Pets program, officially launched in Brazil in September 2021. Aligned with the purpose of building a “Better World for Pets,” the company seeks to facilitate even closer coexistence between people and pets so that they can fully enjoy the benefits of this relationship. The project operates based on four pillars: Homes, Shelters, Businesses, and Public Spaces. It provides assessment tools and materials for companies that want to become pet-friendly, encouraging cities to invest in public policies that recognize pets as part of the family.
