Feature helps users decide the best photos to attract authentic matches.
The dating app Tinder introduces Photo Selector, an AI-powered feature that lets users more easily choose their profile photos from a selection made directly from their device’s gallery.
Authenticity plays a key role in attracting a great match on the app. In a recent Opinium survey of 7,000 singles aged 18 to 25 from seven different countries, 85% said their dating app profiles are important for representing their true selves, 52% said it was difficult to select a profile picture, and 68% said an AI feature to help with photo selection would be helpful.
At the same time, most women prefer to see men’s profiles that have at least four photos, with images that genuinely reflect their personalities. Men who include more than one headshot on their profiles are 71% more likely to get a match. With Photo Selector, Tinder offers a digital assistant that will select photos from users’ camera rolls.
Focus on real connections
Singles aged 18-24 report spending an average of 33 minutes selecting the right profile photo for their dating app. By providing this assistance, Photo Selector allows users to focus more on making meaningful connections instead of spending excessive time selecting photos. This AI-powered innovation promises to bring more spontaneity to the online dating experience.
The emergence of smartphones and portable cameras has brought a new challenge to the digital age: the paradox of choosing from a multitude of options, a challenge that is becoming less difficult with the help of AI technology.
“We’re proud to be the first dating app to launch an AI tool that can significantly ease the profile creation experience – a step we know can be one of the most difficult. As a category leader, we’re challenging ourselves to bring the industry’s best use cases for meaningful AI integrations,” said Faye Iosotaluno, CEO of Tinder. “As the Photo Selector feature shows, we’re building AI technology to help users make decisions, not make them for them. Our commitment to users is clear, and it applies equally to our AI vision: at Tinder, we’re building innovative technologies to create a safer space for authentic connections.”
To use Photo Selector, simply take a selfie for facial recognition, grant access to your camera roll, and let our AI technology select a few images for analysis. You decide which photos you want to select and add to your profile. The traditional selection mode remains available to all users.
Capturing the ideal images
Tinder dating expert Devyn Simone shares her tips on how to choose profile pictures that truly reflect your personality:
- Find your light: Think of yourself as the star of a glamorous photo shoot. Well-lit photos are always the way to go; natural light is your best friend. On a sunny day, find a spot with good shade and take a few variations. It’s always good to have a few options to choose from.
- Avoid confusion: No one wants to play “Where’s Waldo?” with their profile photos. People are here to get to know you, not your group of friends. A group photo is fine, but keep the rest of the photos individual. Choose a bright, fun photo that shows you in your best light.
- Clean the lens: This is basic, but crucial. You don’t want to look like you’ve been photographed with a potato. Give your camera lens a quick wipe with a microfiber cloth before taking the photo. Crisp, clear photos = instant upgrade
- Have fun: Your profile should be a mini story about your life. Show different sides of your personality with a variety of photos: a headshot, an activity photo (of you doing something you love), a social photo, and a candid photo. Inspire people to want to know more about you!
- Mix it up: If your profile pictures are older, it’s time to update them by adding at least one or two new photos. Current photos show that you’re active and excited to make new connections.
Photo Selector will be available in the Brazil region starting in July, as well as in international markets later this winter.
