A full-size replica of a Formula 1 car has been built by Gerdau, the largest Brazilian steel company and one of the global leaders in the production of special steels for the automotive market. Made from 750kg of scrap metal in the official measurements of the world’s leading motorsport competition, the car celebrates the Company’s return as the official steel of the São Paulo Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2024, for the second consecutive edition.
The faithful copy of the Formula 1 car reflects Gerdau’s sustainable production matrix, which uses metal scrap as raw material for around 70% of its steel production, ensuring steel production with low carbon emissions.
“Building a replica of a Formula 1 car using scrap metal, a key element in our steel production, and displaying it in various locations will allow the public to reflect on the role of recycling and the circular economy, important elements in building an even more sustainable future. It also marks the continuation of our pioneering partnership with the São Paulo Formula 1 Grand Prix, the Brazilian leg of the world’s largest and most popular automobile competition,” says Pedro Torres, Gerdau’s director of communications and institutional relations.
The model will be shown to the public for the first time at the Brazilian Steel Congress, organized by the Brazilian Steel Institute, in São Paulo, between August 6 and 8. It will then be placed in several locations in São Paulo and Minas Gerais, such as shopping malls and airports, so that the entire public can have access to the replica.
The vehicle was developed by visual artist Alexandre Bergami, also known by his artistic name Ale NingueM. A graduate in carpentry from the prestigious Leo Madeira, NingueM stands out for his innovative vision, dedication and specialized skills in redefining objects and concepts when it comes to art. Recently, the artist has focused on creating sculptures with metal structures, using organic and technological waste as raw materials. This approach aims not only to draw attention to the importance of sustainability, but also to raise awareness about the need to dispose of such materials responsibly.
