The Batman finally arrived in Brazilian cinemas last Thursday, March 3rd. After almost 3 years with questions about the casting of Robert Pattinson in the role of the batman, the production directed by Matt Reeves arrives with both feet in the door .
Is The Batman the definitive Batman story on the big screen?
Ever since the first Batman movie was released in theaters, many fans of the character have debated the right approach and tone for adapting his stories. With few productions having explored the more detective side of a hero that originated in a story called “Detective Comics”, many bet that the investigative tone was the right way to go.
Apparently, Matt Reeves listened to fans and delivered the mystery story they’ve been asking for for years. The Batman has a noir tone that was already expected after several statements by the director and the actors themselves, but without leaving aside what the comics brought in almost 1 century of stories. On the contrary, the filmmaker realized how these stories go hand in hand with the theme.
Not only focused on the suspenseful plot (with even certain touches of terror) involving the film’s villain, the Riddler played by Paul Dano, the film also works as a character study. Perhaps, this is the area where The Batman hits the most, both as a film and as an adaptation, in understanding, working and developing the hero and his human side, in addition to his psychological aspect.
Even though in previous productions of the character they have gone through the psychological of Bruce Wayne, such as Christopher Nolan’s excellent trilogy or, oddly enough, Batman Forever, none of them come this close to the more disturbed side of the hero. In this movie, we rarely see Bruce in action, it’s like he’s Batman almost 100% of the time.
With Batman’s screen time longer than ever and Reeves’ direction always focusing on the character’s face, particularly the eyes, Pattinson’s biggest acting tool when acting, we have the most intimate version of the masked vigilante. The very choice to play an inexperienced Batman, who has only been active for 2 years, helps to better pave the way for the protagonist’s self-discovery.
The film’s entire narrative, in addition to an investigative plot about a serial killer killing the city’s elite, is also about understanding Batman’s importance in their world and the legacy of the Wayne family. Bruce’s entire development, from the beginning when he calls himself revenge incarnate, to his understanding that he can also be a symbol of hope, not just fear, becomes the focal point of the film and shows that Matt Reeves understood the essence of the character like no one else.
It’s as if this Batman hadn’t yet found himself inside a corruption-infested Gotham City. The narration that starts the plot, another classic element of film noir, makes clear the city with which we are going to deal with the entire film. Unlike Nolan’s Gotham, which was more of an ordinary city, this one applies the “fantastic realism” cited by the director in interviews.
Gotham in The Batman is very similar to the one presented in the Arkham series games, very popular among fans of the character. Almost always at night, and when it’s day, it’s always raining. Those closest to the stories will also recognize the tall buildings and gothic architecture that has always been a hallmark of the city, in addition to the low lighting except for the strong neon lights.
All this serves to create a unique atmosphere to the film, combined with the intense plot that fulfills well with the 3 hours of duration of the feature, never making it seem that nothing is happening on screen. The characters, which are not few here, also have their screen time to shine, whether they are villains or allies of the hero.
The highlight begins with the villain of the plot, the Riddler. Particularly, my biggest fear regarding the new version of the character was that they would turn an antagonist with so much potential into yet another generic serial killer. Still, inspirations from killers like the real-life killer known as the “Zodiac” served as a basis rather than an appropriation. The Riddler’s classic antics and enigmas live on in the film.
Not only that, but villains like the Penguin, who is lived here in an unrecognizable way by Colin Farrell, are also highlighted, both for their importance in the plot (which makes room for the series that the antagonist will win on HBO Max), and for their charisma. . Not only that, but a name little talked about during the film’s marketing also shines a lot: Carmine Falcone, played by John Torturo.
And of course, one name couldn’t be left out: Zoe Kravitz. The new Catwoman is a version that comes closer to fidelity than its previous versions. Still, the praise that can be given to the theaters’ new Selina Kyle goes beyond comparisons to the source material. Not only is the thief’s own plot interesting, but Kravitz also proves she’s a name to keep an eye on among rising actresses.
As much as some names from the hero’s mythology end up being a little faded in The Batman, such as the classic butler Alfred, the film is clearly an introduction to the hero, but without becoming a beat-up origin story. In a feature that explores sides of the vigilante never seen before, the production sets the stage for new stories of the bat man with a bat man that so far must be considered by many the best adaptation for the big screen so far.
