Writer Paula Pimenta is passionate about fairy tales. That’s why she wrote three books dedicated to reimagining stories that most of us are familiar with from Disney cartoons. She adapts the classic stories to modern times here in Brazil. One of them has already been adapted for the cinema, Pop Cinderellawhich is now available on Netflix. Another, Princess of the Waters (adaptation of The Little Mermaid) is in line to be made into a movie. And The Sleeping Princess the adaptation of Sleeping Beautyis coming to the big screen this Thursday. It’s so cute!
Rosa (Pietra Quintela) is a teenager who, like any other, dreams of having her freedom and independence. However, this achievement remains just a dream, since her three parents who raised her overprotect the girl at all costs, not allowing her to live the experiences that adolescence brings. When Rosa turns 15, she discovers that the world she belongs to is actually a dream. And the world she dreamed of is her true reality. Rosa is a princess from a distant country and a mystery from the past comes to light. That’s when a vengeful villain could put her life in danger.
What did I think?
The film must be analyzed according to its purpose. It is obviously aimed at children and teenagers. For adults it is extremely silly, but that does not mean it is not cute and pretty. The script is fun, and it is also a great adaptation of the story we know. The Sleeping Princess takes place in the same universe as Pop Cinderella, which is why Maisa makes a special appearance as DJ Cíntia (those who have seen it will understand). Pietra Quintela is a delight in the main role, but the one who almost steals the film is Livia Silva (Teca de Reborn) as Rosa’s fun friend.
There’s romance, there’s comedy (the hungry cop is great). The cast also has interesting appearances by Juliana Knust and Patricia França, the latter in her first film since Orpheus (1999). In the end, you will probably think it’s silly, but your daughter, granddaughter, niece should have fun.
I had the opportunity to talk to the author of the book The Sleeping PrincessPaula Pimenta, and actresses Pietra Quintela (who is the daughter of former Dominó, Marcos Quintela) and Lívia Silva. It was a really nice chat!
