With wider columns, pages increase from 40 to 64
Folha de S. Paulo will adopt the Berliner format starting next Sunday, September 1st, replacing the standard model used since the newspaper was founded in 1921. The model is already used by the newspapers O Estado de S. Paulo, O Povo (CE) and Gazeta do Povo (PR), in addition to propmark.
Designed by Estúdio Thema, the new graphic design makes the publication easier to handle, as it now has more content. With wider columns, the pages have increased from 40 to 64. The ‘Folha Guide’ returns in a detachable format and will be published together with ‘Food’ on Fridays.
The French news outlets Le Monde and Le Figaro, the British Guardian, the Portuguese Expresso and the Italian Corriere della Sera and La Stampa already use the format, which is also used in Die Welt and Tagesspiegel, from Germany – the birthplace of the Berliner, at the beginning of the 20th century.
Known for attracting advertisers, the design balances content and ads, is more compact, modern, and adapts to the behavior of readers, especially the younger generations, in an era increasingly dominated by cell phone screens. New advertising solutions favor the visibility of the pieces, among other innovations.
