Carrefour has in its history some controversies that shook the public and raised several cases of boycotts, such as animal abuse and racism. Despite the difficulty of fully recovering the image, the French supermarket chain is betting on remedial measures aimed at a social benefit.
On March 8, International Women’s Day, Grupo Carrefour Brasil will promote a special action to support the future of girls and young women in the country. On the date, part of the income obtained from the sale of French bread, traditionally produced by Bakeries at Carrefour stores, will be donated to Plan International Brasil, a non-governmental organization that defends the rights of children, adolescents and young people, with a focus on promoting equality of genre.
To contribute to the campaign, the customer must go to any of the physical stores of the Carrefour chain – hypermarkets, supermarkets (Neighborhood and Market) and Express – and buy French bread. Automatically, part of this sale will be donated to Plan International Brasil, which works to impact the lives of 10 million girls in the country by 2023.
The campaign is one of the initiatives developed by Grupo Carrefour Brasil, through its Diversity and Inclusion Platform, aimed at promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment. In addition to integrating institutional commitments related to this front, such as the Business Movement for the Economic Development of Women (Mulher 360), and having an affinity group dedicated exclusively to the theme, Carrefour por Elas, the company follows a global commitment to have at least 40% of key leadership positions held by women by 2025, in all countries where it is present.
Grupo Carrefour Brasil develops IDE (Inclusion, Diversity and Equity), an internal program aimed at developing and accelerating the careers of employees from minority groups (women, black people, people with disabilities, trans people and refugees). The company also develops relevant work in the fight against violence against women, with a specific internal policy on the issue, periodic awareness campaigns and actions aimed at hiring women in situations of violence.
