The Walt Disney Company Brazil has just announced the launch of the second edition of the project “Marvel – The Power Is Ours” – a Marvel initiative designed for the Brazilian public. The first edition took place in 2022 and brought together five black artists to create reinterpretations of black Marvel characters through their own artistic styles. The works were later transformed into style guides, giving rise to exclusive collections of licensed clothing, footwear and accessories.
This year, in line with the project’s purpose, Marvel Brazil teamed up with KondZilla and invited artists Jovem MK, MC Luanna and Malcolm VL to perform a trap song that links Marvel’s black heroes to the reality of black youth in Brazil. The single “Poder É Nosso” was written by Coruja BC1, with musical production by DJ MaxnosBeatZ, and will be available on all digital platforms starting September 28.
The KondZilla team was also responsible for producing the music video for the song, which will be released on September 28th on Kondzilla’s YouTube channel. Directed by Kaique Alves and recorded in Heliópolis, the largest community in São Paulo, and in the city center, the production presents young black people in a situation of victory and how they feel when they are called upon by a power that represents the strength of heroes and heroines without capes.
Both productions reinforce Marvel’s positioning as a diverse brand, bringing it closer to the black population in communities through music. In addition, Marvel Brazil will also release mini-documentaries on its official YouTube channel showing behind the scenes and production of the music, with interviews with the artists.
“The opportunity to connect the history and reality of many young people in Brazil with Marvel’s black heroes is an incredible opportunity to inspire and show the responsibility that art has. And the way it was done, through artists who represent urban culture in their lyrics and attitudes, gives the project a lot of originality and makes it unique. The end result is charming and celebrates the creative union of KondZilla, Disney and Marvel,” says Tico Fernandes, Creative Director and Partner at KondZilla.
“In the second edition of Marvel – The Power is Ours, we explore music as a powerful artistic expression, capable of reflecting the experiences and cultural richness of different communities, connecting them in an unprecedented way to the Marvel universe. The Power is Ours consolidates itself as a strategic and recurring pillar of Marvel in Brazil, promoting social integration and a positive impact on society,” says Lucas Younis, Head of Marketing Brazil for Consumer Products at The Walt Disney Company Brazil.
Just like the first edition, this year’s project will also extend to retail through exclusive licensed collections, launched by brands such as Converse, C&A, Condor, Kenner, among others.
In the second year of the “Marvel – The Power Is Ours” project, Disney will also continue to support Feira Preta. During the months of October and November, the Feira Preta Institute will offer Afrolab, a training course that will be offered in person to 30 young black people with a focus on audiovisual and online art, serving a total of 60 participants. The in-person classes will be held at the Museu das Favelas, an institution of the Secretariat of Culture, Economy and Creative Industry of the State of São Paulo, which seeks to highlight the art and memories of the country’s favelas. Some pieces produced by the students during Afrolab will be part of the “Marvel – The Power Is Ours” project exhibition, which will open to the public on November 26 at the Museum. This initiative is part of Disney Future Storytellers, a Disney proposal that offers inspiration and training to young people who will be the future professionals of the creative industry. The program promotes access to opportunities for underrepresented communities, helping to form a representative and respectful workforce.
To give even more visibility to the project, “Marvel – The Power is Ours” will have space in events with Marvel participation, audiovisual content for fans and much more.
