New account will be private, with message restrictions, interaction limitations and social media usage limits
Instagram has announced the launch of an account for teenagers, with a session that offers more privacy and restrictions that will be controlled by parents and only users aged 16 or over will be able to change the settings.
Among the protections offered by the new feature are private accounts, where the user must accept new followers; message restrictions, automatically placing teenagers in the most restrictive settings of the platform’s sensitive content control, which limits the type of content they can access from the Explore and Reels tabs.
Additionally, the account will also limit interactions, making it so that users can only be tagged or mentioned by people they follow, and will send time limit reminders, asking them to log out of the app after 60 minutes of use.
“The new protections are designed to address some of the biggest concerns parents have, including who their kids are talking to online, what content they’re consuming and whether their time is being spent wisely. These protections are automatically turned on, and parents can choose whether their teens under 16 can change any of these settings to be less stringent,” the company explained.
For parents, Instagram will allow them to have information about who their teens are chatting with, set daily usage time limits, prevent them from using the social network during specific periods, and see what topics their kids are following.
According to the statement presented by Meta, starting in January, teenagers from all over the world will be able to access the Teen Account.
