I know a lot of people who love a movie based on a true story. And around and around Hollywood invents something. Here I made a list of films that I really like and that are available on streaming. They have very little in common, other than real characters with great courage to move forward. I like that!
A Life: The Story of Nicholas Winton – Prime Video
We don’t even know a part of these great heroes who changed history, saving so many people during several wars. The film A Life – The Story of Nicholas Winton tells one of these stories. The film takes place in two phases. It shows the extraordinary and humanitarian Nicholas Winton (played by the great Johnny Flynn and Anthony Hopkins). In 1938, during the Second World War, he went to visit Prague and was horrified by the situation in which families lived there due to the strong influence of Nazi Germany. Compassionate about the situation, Nicholas, together with a support group, managed to help, especially children, to escape the Holocaust and go to England before the borders closed. Years later, Nicholas Winton is plagued with guilt thinking about those he failed to rescue. That’s when he receives an invitation to participate in a TV show. It’s impossible not to get emotional!
The Price of Truth – Netflix/Globoplay
The script was adapted from an article in The New York Times magazine. Written by Nathaniel Rich, it had the suggestive title of The Man Who Became DuPont’s Worst Nightmare. For those who don’t know, DuPont is one of the largest chemical companies in the world, and for a long time it was the largest. Rob Billot (Mark Ruffalo) is a successful corporate lawyer who makes a living defending large companies. But a farmer from his grandmother’s town draws his attention to deaths that may be linked to toxic waste from a large corporation. Rob then embarks on a fight for the truth, single-handedly managing a years-long court case. It then puts your career, your family and your future in general at risk. Anne Hathaway plays Rob’s wife.
Rustin – Netflix
Rustin tells the story of Bayard Rustin, advisor to Martin Luther King Jr.. He dedicated his life to the search for racial equality and democracy. He was even responsible for organizing the civil rights march in Washington in the 1960s, which changed the history of the United States. But as a black, gay man, he was all but erased from the civil rights movement. Rustin is produced by Barack and Michelle Obama. The total show is by Colman Domingo. He competed for an Oscar, Golden Globe and Critics Choice. It was awarded at the Palm Springs festival. The film is good, but Colman Domingo is amazing!
Deep Horizon: Non-Gulf Disaster – Netflix/Globoplay
Based on real events, the story takes place in the Gulf of Mexico, on the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling platform. But one of the worst oil spills in US history happens. And Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg) and the other workers on board fight to escape the terrible accident with their lives. The cast also includes Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson and Dylan O’Brien. Exciting!
Ferrari – Prime Video
The film tells a part of the life of Enzo Ferrari, the founder of the brand that became synonymous with luxury and racing cars. Ferrari focuses on the period during the summer of 1957. Bankruptcy looms over the company that Enzo Ferrari and his wife Laura (Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz) built ten years earlier. He decides to go all in on the iconic Mille Miglia, a long-distance car race across Italy. In the process, Enzo redefined the idea of the high-performance Italian sports car. The cast also includes Gabriel Leone, Shailene Woodley and Patrick Dempsey. The film has an interesting story and good moments.
The Snow Society – Netflix
The film is a Spanish production, directed by JA Bayona, from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. In 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, chartered to take a rugby team to Chile, crashes into a glacier in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 of its 45 passengers survive the accident. They are trapped in one of the most inaccessible and hostile environments on the planet. This is when they are forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive. The Snow Society received an Oscar nomination for foreign film.
