Between January and February 2025, the Faculty of Public Health of the University of São Paulo (USP) will hold the 32nd edition of the Summer Program, an initiative that offers university extension courses for the general and academic community. There will be almost 30 in-person and remote courses, including exclusive training for communication professionals who work in the production and dissemination of health for conventional or digital media.
The program aims to add more knowledge and social responsibility to the work of journalists and communicators, offering useful tools to improve social mediation activity and combat misinformation circulating on social networks. To this end, the course will explore the concept of Health Literacy, a term coined in 1970 to assess people’s ability to obtain, understand, evaluate and use health information for personal and collective well-being. The classes will also offer guidance on health promotion, disease prevention and training to act towards reducing inequalities.
“The proposal is that the learning of HL concepts and models is incorporated into the skills of these professionals so that they work in a coordinated way with public health and health promotion initiatives”, explains journalist Cristina Almeida, creator of the course.
All meetings will be held online between February 3rd and 7th, from 2pm to 6pm. With 20 hours of total workload, the schedule is divided into six independent and complementary modules: Public health and health promotion; Explain and understand health literacy: Concepts and dimensions; Isn’t health education the same thing?; It is necessary to change lives: training in health literacy and health promotion; A sense of health; The other side of health literacy: the sources perspective.
Those responsible for conducting the classes are professors from the Faculty of Public Health and Medicine at USP and the Sérgio Arouca National School of Public Health, linked to Fiocruz. Students will also have the opportunity to learn from guests specializing in Education and Philosophy.
