Alaf’s objective is to support the agency capacity of different sectors to face global systemic crises
The Latin Futures Association (Alaf) arrived on the market with the aim of supporting the agency capacity of different sectors to face global systemic crises based on Futures Studies methodologies.
This discipline maps risks and opportunities based on data that connects evidence of potential futures to concrete strategies, gaining relevance in the face of the climate emergency and growing social disparities.
With services focused on consultancy and education, the association emerged as a reflection of the trend towards changes in values within companies, driven by the climate crisis and social inequalities, which encourage corporate responsibility and ESG criteria (acronym in English for Environmental, Social and Governance).
ALAF seeks to develop leaders capable of Literacy in Futures, a skill considered essential for the 21st century by organizations such as UNESCO. According to the projection of the GSIA (Global Sustainable Investment Alliance), investments aligned with these criteria could exceed US$40 trillion globally by 2030. Regulations are important for this sector, so that so-called ‘greenwashing’ – the practice of companies that promote as sustainable without taking real action, misleading consumers and investors.
According to Lydia Caldana, founder and president of ALAF, and futures strategist, the organization is committed to creating a positive impact by helping companies, governments and organizations lead a fair and sustainable transition. “We have in our hands a powerful tool for those who not only want to survive the changes, but to lead the transition to a fairer future,” he stated.
Lua Couto, director of ALAF’s Future Generations axis and researcher of Regenerative Narratives, highlights the importance of protecting the interests of future generations, transforming social structures. “Climate change is a manifestation of how we inhabit the Earth, but the problem goes beyond that, touching consumerism, capitalism and colonialism”, he explains.
In addition to the central theme of the well-being of Future Generations, three other axes guide ALAF’s actions: ‘More-than-human’, ancestral knowledge and Latino and long-term identity.
The launch agenda includes participation in the 3rd edition of the Dubai Future Forum, on the 19th, and a free masterclass on futures literacy in the Latin American context, offered on the 12th by vice-president Joice Pereira, specialist in Social Foresight.
