The lawsuit filed by the United States Department of Justice demands a restructuring of the big tech business, and, if the judge adopts the Justice Department’s recommendations, Google will be forced to sell the Chrome browser within six months of the final decision. .
In the case of Android, authorities indicate that it is a crucial platform for big tech that favors its own products. An alternative provides for the imposition of rules so that Android does not apply anti-competitive practices, until the system is split with Google withdrawing control.
Google must present its recommendations in documents by December 2024 and the judge responsible for the case will hear both parties involved in the process. The hearings are scheduled for April, with the final decision expected by May 1, 2025. The company may file an appeal, extending the process deadline.
In August, Google had already faced a lawsuit that found that the company illegally monopolized the online search market. In addition, big tech was also investigated for maintaining dominance in the market for selling and purchasing online advertisements.
