On World Recycling Day, Corona reveals the results of its first Plastic Fishing Tournament in Brazil — the project is part of a global initiative carried out around the world in partnership with local fishermen to remove plastic from the sea, making society aware of marine pollution, protecting the environment and economically benefiting the communities involved.
In Brazil, the Tournament took place in February in Caraguatatuba, on the north coast of São Paulo, with the support of the NGO Guardians of the Sea and the participation of 55 fishermen. In a single day, more than 1 ton of waste that harms marine life was removed from the sea, half of which (500 kg) was just plastic.
The initiative reaffirmed Corona’s long-standing commitment to protecting the oceans from plastic pollution and also benefited the region’s fishermen, who made this “unusual catch” a sustainability success: as well as a cash prize for the three teams. who removed the largest amount of waste from the water, the tournament also rewarded all participating fishermen with remuneration equivalent to a day’s work and paid the additional amount for each kilo of plastic collected. Corona will also renovate the main local shed, used by the Praia da Cocanha community as a cultural center and storage for boats and other work tools for fishermen.
according to World Economic Forum, it is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the sea. “The pollution of the oceans around the world is alarming and Corona continues to look for ways to expand its efforts to protect and preserve these natural paradises, across Brazil and the world.”, says João Pedro Zattar, head de marketing de Corona.“The Plastic Fishing Tournament is an example of an initiative that unites communities to help the environment and also economically supports the regions, in partnership with workers who support their families through fishing.”, he complements.
The project was born from an internal corporate social responsibility innovation challenge, which was tested for the first time in Mexico in 2021, passing through Brazil China and Israel in 2022 and should also expand to Colombia and South Africa later this year. . To date, Corona beer has carried out over 1,400 cleanups, engaged over 68,000 volunteers and collected plastic waste from over 44 million square meters of beachfront worldwide. Globally, the Plastic Fishing Tournament counted with the help of 150 fishermen for 15 hours, removing more than 5 tons of plastic from the sea so far.
The Plastic Fishing Tournament is not the first sustainability-led project led by Corona. In addition to this initiative, more than 25 cleanings have already been carried out in Brazil since 2019, cleaning 1.2 million m² of beaches and collecting more than 5.4 tons of garbage discarded irregularly in nature. In partnership with Green Mining and Precious Plastic, the beer also opened in 2021 the Protect Paradise stations, with two containers installed in Fernando de Noronha (PE) and Trancoso (BA) for the collection, recycling and transformation of plastic, each one with capacity to process up to 1.5 ton of plastic per month.
This same project currently has a focus on the collection and recycling of glass in Chapada dos Veadeiros (GO), serving establishments and the local population to give the material the correct destination and avoid pollution of nature. In May 2021, it was also officially announced as one of the sponsors of Voz dos Oceanos, the new expedition of sailors of the Schurmann Family that, for two years, will act to give visibility to the cause of maritime pollution, especially as a result of plastic. .
