EA Sports officially confirmed yesterday afternoon, March 22, the removal of the player Diego Maradona from FIFA 22. The Argentine, who passed away in 2020, will be removed from the Ultimate Team modes, from Ultimate Draft and the Soccer Aid World Team. Additionally, he will also no longer appear in Squad Building Challenges (DMEs) and Drafts in-game.
The withdrawal came after complications in a dispute over Maradona’s image rights with EA. The decision comes from the Argentine court and was published by the newspaper Clarín in November last year. The information was first given by the user Fut Sheriff, which is already known for making important leaks related to the game. The brand in turn reported that everything happened for “a third-party legal dispute”
Check out FIFA’s notice of the decision:
Maradona’s image rights currently belong to lawyer Matías Morla, owner of the company Sattvica SA. EA Sports would have made a deal with a personal friend of the Argentine player, Stéfano Ceci, to have the rights to the star. However, he is not the real holder of Diego’s image.
According to the judge’s ruling:
“Immediately cease the use of the marks, indicated in annex 8. of the process, which can be found in any media, in addition to refraining from using them on the platforms on which FIFA 21, FIFA Ultimate Team, FIFA Street, FIFA World Class Soccer, Football Manager and EA Ultimate Player are distributed.
As well as ceasing the advertising of the aforementioned products, whether in pamphlets, internet, radio, television and/or any other means of dissemination”.
