The Oscars ceremony was a long one, and there were no surprises among the recipients. A feather! For some reason In the Rhythm of the Heart filled the Academy voters with love. And took the Oscar for best film Attack of the Dogs, which until a few weeks ago was the big favorite. It won three awards: film, supporting actor and adapted screenplay. Danube won the most awards – all technical. There were six in all. But in the end, what really mattered were the non-prize moments.
the tributes
The various homages to films from the past such as The Godfather, Juno, Pulp Fiction were exciting and fun. And even with the cast present. I loved it!
Lady Gaga with Liza Minelli, who was visibly confused, was one of the most emotional moments I’ve ever seen. Liza’s situation, whom I saw dancing and singing on stage, is extremely sad. But Gaga was respectful, sweet, and perfect. I became even more of a fan!
In Memoriam was a little different, but I liked seeing some tributes, like for Betty White, for Jamie Lee Curtis, and Bill Murray for Ivan Reitman. It was beautiful!
the songs
The performances of the songs were high points. Belfast music was missing. Legend has it that Van Morrison had shows already booked. but it was also said that he had not agreed to be tested for COVID and/or vaccinated. It is not known which is the true version. But Beyonce opening the party with the music of King Richard it was a show of power.
the cap
And of course, the most unexpected moment of the night. Will Smith’s assault on Chris Rock. As far as is known, Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald spot. That she would star in the second part of No Edge of Honor, that movie with Demi Moore where she shaves her hair. Will freaked out and climbed onto the stage and slapped him. Until that moment people started to think it was a sketch, an act. But then Will came down from the stage and started cursing telling Chris not to talk about his wife. Chris even went so far as to get the best documentary introductory text wrong. Then came the story that Jada suffers from alopecia, a disease that causes hair loss. And for that, Will would have taken that attitude.
Denzel Washington talked to him, and when his name was announced as Best Actor, he was visibly moved. He made a comparison with the situation of his character, Richard Williams, who always wants to defend his family. He apologized to those present and the Academy. He ended by saying that he hopes they will invite him to the party again.
With that, the best image ended up being this one with Nicole Kidman’s reaction to everything that happened. Not even Lucille Ball would have made a better face.
In the Rhythm of the Heart
Despite Netflix’s numerous attempts, Apple TV was the first streamer to win the Oscar for best picture. Despite being available here on Amazon Prime, In the Rhythm of the Heart was released in the United States by Apple. Other historic moments were Jane Campion becoming the third woman to win the director’s award. It was the only Attack of the Dogs award. Troy Kotsur (In the Rhythm of the Heart) was the first deaf man to win an Oscar for acting. And one of the sweetest moments of the night was Minari actress Youn Yuh-jung holding his figurine so he could make the signs to communicate.
Jessica Chastain
A minute’s silence was also called for by the victims of the Ukraine war. Jessica Chastain’s speech as best actress was moving and spoke about the rising number of suicides in the country.
