Last year, around this time, the Disney Plus debuted his first Marvel series. It was the brilliant WandaVision, which even competed for several awards (and won much less than it should). And now, this Wednesday (30), she debuts a new series that she promises. moon knight, with Oscar Isaac, will only have six episodes, which will arrive one each week. I’ve seen the first two – and LOVED it!
The series follows Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac). He is a kind and polite museum store clerk, who is plagued with blackouts and memories of another life. Eventually, Steven discovers he shares the body with a mercenary named Marc Spector (Oscar Isaac too). As Steven/Marc’s enemies turn on them, they both end up plunging into a deadly mystery between the mighty gods of Egypt.
The hero
Created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin, Moon Knight made his comic book debut in Werewolf by Night #32, in August 1975. I confess that I had never heard of this Marvel hero. With that, every moment of the series, with its origin story, was a discovery. He does not position himself, at least in these first episodes, within the MCU, as WandaVision, Archer hawk, etc. It’s very likely that this will happen in the future, but for now it looks like an old-school series – spectacularly produced – telling the story of a new hero.
What did I think of moon knight?
The first episode is brilliant. We follow Steven’s point of view, who feels totally lost with the situations he goes through. In the very first episode, Steven wakes up in a village in the Alps meeting the one who will be the villain of the story. Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) wants a scarab brooch, which Steven has found. All to bring back an Egyptian goddess. For his part, Steven, in addition to sharing his body with Marc Spector, is also tormented by the voice of another “competing” Egyptian god. This one is deliciously made by Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham. It is through his incorporation that Steven/Mar becomes the Moon Knight.
All of this gives Oscar Isaac room to lie down and roll around in fun moments, with Steven totally confused about what’s going on. In addition, there is the entity that pursues you. There’s a scene in the museum, which is pretty scary. And with that the series alternates moments of comedy, horror and action / chase. There’s a moment in the second episode when the moon knight manifests itself, that there is a great night chase on top of London buildings.
And in the end…
The second episode ends with Steven/Marc’s arrival in Cairo. Director Mohamed Diab has been very critical of the way Hollywood treats Egypt and Cairo. Specially mentioned Wonder Woman 1984. So it will be interesting to see what treatment you will have in moon knight. But one thing is for sure, the series will likely be a new triumph for Marvel and Disney Plus. And especially for Oscar Isaac, who is phenomenal – as always – with his double – or triple – role. A lot of people talked about his accent, which for us, who speak Portuguese, is irrelevant. I loved everything!
Gaspard Ulliel
PS – The miniseries also features French actor Gaspard Ulliel, who plays Anton Mogart/ Midnight Man. He passed away earlier this year in a skiing accident. He was 37 years old. The article on the subject is on here. Until the second episode he had not appeared in the series.
