It is undeniable that women have been conquering professional spaces that, for a long time, were denied to them. Traditionally “male” careers (does employment have a gender?) are gradually being transformed by the arrival of more and more female professionals. This paradigm shift is revolutionizing the market as a whole, but some sectors feel the change more intensely – among them is Communication.
A survey developed by Revelo, a platform for technological solutions for Human Resources, points out that, in 2020, more than 50% of professionals working in digital marketing were already women. For comparison, in another area traditionally dominated by men, finance, equality is already close: 48% of the vacancies were occupied by women. However, this same survey points to a disparity in management positions: in the case of digital marketing, less than half of women have some leadership role.
But, after all, why is it so important to have women leading teams and companies? The answer to this question has, as you might imagine, many layers.
First, it is important to point out that, for a long time, our workforce was erased from history. Protected from domestic work, wives, mothers and daughters only had more freedom to work outside the home in the 20th century. However, activities such as cooking, washing, ironing and taking care of the family continued to be a female “obligation”, causing most women to have a double shift, overloading them with external and internal tasks at home. Therefore, giving women leadership positions in companies is a way of recognizing their effort, dedication and competence to occupy these positions – factors that are, unfortunately, ignored by many companies and employers even today.
In addition, promoting women to management positions contributes to increasing the economic power and financial independence of these professionals. Often with lower salary expectations than male candidates, women also suffer from unequal salaries: data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) show that women earn about 23% less than their male counterparts. in similar positions. In addition to the financial issue, this disparity makes us feel frustrated, incapable and even psychological difficulties, such as anxiety, burnout and imposter syndrome. Valuing a woman is a way of initiating profound transformations in an entire working class, setting precedents and enabling successful examples.
corporate advantages
The presence of women in leadership positions also brings advantages to companies. Today, it is known how much diversity is closely linked to the ability to innovate. Bringing together people who think differently, feel differently and come from different realities makes the team, as a whole, have a multiplicity of perspectives on the same problem, increasing the chances of creating innovative solutions.
It is worth mentioning that the presence of women in the leadership and high echelon of companies opens doors for other minority groups to be embraced by the organization: when a group is strengthened, certain behaviors and conducts are questioned and radically transformed, making the environment business to be more open and welcoming.
These are just a few examples of why having women in management positions is so important. When a woman achieves success, she is showing so many others that, yes, it is possible to dream bigger, it is possible to grow. After all, a woman’s place is where she wants to be.
