EA Sports announced this Wednesday, March 31, that it will withdraw the player Miguel Van Damme from his main game, FIFA 22. The goalkeeper played for Cercle Brugge, Belgium, and unfortunately died of leukemia yesterday. This is not the first case that the company removes a player for the same reason, as recently Jorgi Bongard was also removed from the game.
Check out EA’s message after Van Damme’s withdrawal from FIFA 22:
As can be seen in the statement itself, EA explained the goalkeeper’s withdrawal saying that the measure was taken to respect his legacy. This kind of attitude on the part of the brand happens because, several times before, FIFA 22 players took advantage of a player’s death to profit from his card after his death in Ultimate Team mode.
Van Damme passed away at the age of 28. He discovered the disease in 2016, shortly after he started playing for Cercle Brugge. In 2020, the goalkeeper reported that the treatment was no longer effective and his death yesterday, the 30th, was reported by the club itself, which kept the professional in its squad.
In a more recent example of a similar event, EA removed Riuler de Oliveira from FIFA 22. The Brazilian player played for Japan’s Shonan Bellmare and died of a heart attack.
