Many people prophesied that the pandemic would hasten the end of cinema. I’ve always argued that no, cinema will continue to exist for a long time. The difference will be what we see in it. It will be the big productions, the blockbusters, Marvel, DC, game characters. Art films are also expected to continue to have their audiences in smaller theaters. What changes – from my point of view – is that average films, or those that delivered less than they promised (like Deep waters), should be released directly to the stream. That was very clear to me with this weekend’s worldwide box office results.
Even with most of the destructive reviews (mine was one of the nicest – see on here) from Morbius, the film managed to reach a considerable number of 84 million dollars in its first weekend in the world. Sonic 2, which arrives here next week, was launched in 31 international territories. And it got a positive number of 25.5 million. In addition, the Batman by Robert Pattinson, has surpassed the magic number of 700 million at the box office worldwide so far.
And there’s still powerful stuff to come. In addition to Sonic 2, the month of April (full of holidays around here) will have other big premieres. On the 14th, arrives Fantastic Beasts – Dumbledore’s Secrets. On the 21st, the adventure arrives Lost City, with Sandra Bullock. And on the 28th, the second film from Downton Abbey . Well, I know this one isn’t that big, but I love it, and I really want to see it, lol.
That is, even with all the strength of streaming, it seems to remain steady and strong – just a little different.
