Despite taking place in the same magical universe, the saga of fantastic beasts never reached the levels of popularity of Harry Potter. Sure, the movies aren’t that great, but they still function as entertainment. The third chapter of the saga, Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets arrives this Thursday in cinemas. It is superior to the previous one, The Crimes of Grindelwaldbut it has a late-party atmosphere.
The story
In the story, Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) knows that the powerful dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving to take control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he asks Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team. She has wizards, witches and a brave Muggle baker on a dangerous quest. In it, they meet old and new fantastic animals. They travel far and wide, and come into conflict with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. But with so many threats, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?
The film doesn’t take long to reveal one of Dumbledore’s secrets. In a beautiful scene in a restaurant, he clearly says what everyone already knew. Dumbledore and Grindelwald were a very passionate couple (. But like so many cases, things didn’t end well. And now the two are on opposite sides. It doesn’t take long for us to hear about Grindelwald’s plan. He wants to take over the wizarding world and declare war. to “muggles.” But as Grindelwald managed to find a way to predict the future (#semspoilers), a different plan is needed, which involves, of course, Newt Scamander and a very unlikely group.
Chinese censorship
Detail: the Chinese government ordered that references to Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s romantic relationship be removed. Warner accepted, and six seconds or two lines were edited. Warner has expressed itself on the matter. “…We want audiences around the world to be able to see and enjoy this film. And it’s important for us that the Chinese have that experience too. Despite these minor edits.” Just remembering that the Chinese market has 1.4 billion people.
What did I think of this new one? fantastic beasts?
The story follows the various paths, and often, you end up lost with the goals of each of them (lol). but everything is tightly tied, which makes you follow with attentive eyes. Everything became more agile and cohesive. There are a lot of special effects, especially good ones, like the cute Qilin (#semspoilers 2). Other fantastic animals return and steal the show with their cuteness.
In the cast, Eddie Redmayne remains a cute Newt. Jude Law brings the usual dignity to Dumbledore. And Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) is still the most interesting character in history. Maria Fernanda Cândido has only one line. But her character is important, and she works well. The big triumph however is the presence of Mads Mikkelsen as Grindelwald. He manages to impose his scary way (remember Hannibal at various times). It makes me feel like him stepping into Johnny Depp’s shoes was good for the story.
Fun fact: the election in the final part of the film was supposed to have taken place in Brazil. But due to the pandemic, she was eventually transferred to Bhutan. However, it is still possible to see a scene of Christ the Redeemer.
the conflicts
So far it is not known if there will be a fourth film of fantastic beasts. The feeling is that Warner will wait to see the box office results. originally, the plan was for five films. But behind the scenes it was extremely complicated. First were author JK Rowling’s bigoted statements. Then came Johnny Depp’s problems with Amber Heard. These caused Warner to drop him from the third film, and replace him with Mads Mikkelsen. And recently, the situation of Ezra Miller scandals (Credence Barebone) didn’t help either. So wait and see how this magical universe will turn out. But if you end up in this one, it was worth it.
