A Sony is looking into the possibility of placing advertisements on its PlayStation gaming platform. So far, the idea is only for free PS Store games, according to an Insider report.
The ads would be in the games and can serve as a way to monetize more developers and thus encourage the creation of games. According to an article in The Verge, the ads should be released by the end of the year.
discreet
For gamers concerned with immersion within the game, Sony’s idea is to create ads discreetly, like inside an in-game billboard. Another option to encourage the practice is to create rewards for players who watch ads, sold in a private market.
Xbox, Sony’s big competitor, revealed to have similar plans, with the same application deadline. However, Insider said Xbox doesn’t plan to cut revenue.
concerns
A possible challenge of Sony’s proposal is to attract advertisers to an entirely new and somewhat uncertain environment. Ads within violent or adult games can be a hindrance.
In addition, there is not a very effective control to analyze the efficiency of the ads, since the platform will not be able to predict what the viewer will do after the experience. There is a difficulty in understanding consumer behaviors in this scenario, however, the idea continues to be analyzed and more details should be revealed soon. Learn more at The Verge.
