Maybe you’ve heard of a 70’s movie called The Man Who Fell to Earth. It is based on a bestseller, and stars David Bowie. It told the story of an alien who comes to Earth in search of the salvation of his planet: water. In disguise, he makes use of advanced technologies to get the money needed to build the ship that will take him back home. However, he must survive the tough competition of the business world and earthly temptations. Unfortunately, despite being cult, the film is not currently available on streaming. And now, a miniseries with the same title comes to Paramount Plus. In fact, it is a sequel, which premieres this Monday (25), with 10 episodes with weekly premieres.
Now, a lot of time has passed since the events of the first movie. A new alien from the same planet arrives on Earth. Things are still bad there and his brothers suffer. And the alien arrives at a key moment in human history. He will need to face his own past in order to guarantee a better future for his equals and for humanity. He has a new technology that can evolve humans into something in theory superior. But the alien has several problems. In addition to caring about his homeland and Earth, he also needs to maintain the anonymity of human authorities. That’s because these can reach him and his mission, ending the chances of survival of the two races.
What did I think of The Man Who Fell to Earth?
You don’t have to have seen the ’70s movie, or read the book, to get into the story. I don’t even remember the old movie. But I remember that it was a very serious and terrifying thing. The series is different. At least in the first four episodes, which were made available to the press, the story has a little bit of everything. from memories of Terminator e Starman, even fun times. But, make no mistake, there are also scenes of violence, a sadistic character, and a lot of suspense. The series still makes references to ecology, immigration, prejudice and violence.
All this works very well. It’s hard to know if it will continue to maintain efficiency for the remaining six episodes. But it has great quality, starting with the cast. I usually have my restrictions with Chiwetel Ejiofor, but here it works fine. From the moment he arrives, when he knows little about Earth, to the beginning of the story, told in a fast forward, when he presents himself to the crowd as if he were a Steve Jobs.
Along with him is Naomie Harris – always great. She plays a scientist who is in a dire situation when the alien convinces her to help him. But the cast still has other amazing appearances. Bill Nighy takes on the character of David Bowie in the first film. Jimmi Simpson (Westworld) is scary as the sadistic CIA agent. And still great appearances by Clarke Peters (Blood Detachment), Kate Mulgrew, e Rob Delaney (The Bubble).
And in the end…
In the end, at least in these early episodes, The Man Who Fell to Earth is a series that will leave you intrigued. The first episode leaves you full of questions, which begin to be answered in the third. But this mix of genres makes everything very curious. Worth knowing!
