After the huge success of Spider-Man: No Return Home, everyone was curious to see what the next Marvel movie would look like. AND Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has this and other commitments to MCU fans. Not only is it expected to be a sort of sequel to Spider manbut also of Avengers: Endgame and especially from the Disney Plus series, Wanda Vision. The film opens this Thursday in theaters, meets some expectations, but lacks others.
The movie starts with a big action sequence where the Doctor has to protect a young girl. But soon after, the Doctor is at his beloved Christine’s wedding (with another) when a new monster appears in New York, and it’s after the same girl from the beginning. It is at this moment that the Doctor realizes that he needs to protect the young woman, and that he needs help. More specifically Wanda Maximoff. But he also realizes that he’s going to need mystical allies old and new. And to do so, he will traverse the mind-bending alternate realities of the Multiverse to face a mysterious new adversary.
What did I find?
The film is directed by Sam Raimi. And anyone who knows his filmography will recognize his style. Not only in the action scenes, but in a few gothic ones, and to be impressed by zombies and other scary beings. With that, the art direction, Danny Elfman’s score impress. But, as always, the problem lies with the script. The movie is more serious than usual at Marvel. The script is full of ups and downs, which many people not involved with the Marvel universe may have difficulty understanding. The same applies to those who did not attend. WandaVision (Disney Plus).
But of course there are a lot of people who want to see the movie because of the cameos. Much has been written about this, about who might appear. There are familiar characters, some from other universes. There are others, under the command of new interpreters. And there are still people we don’t know yet, but who are quite famous. For those looking for special appearances, it’s a full plate. I even applauded when one of them appeared. Another, which makes no difference to the story, is made by Bruce Campbell, of Evil Dead. He makes a really fun cameo, with two sequels – which have references to Sam Raimi films.
The cast is worth anything. Benedict Cumberbatch is always great, Benedict Wong is fun. I was very happy to see Rachel McAdams return as Christine. And even in action scenes. I’d like to see a movie centered around her becoming a superhero. And of course, Elizabeth Olsen, who is always perfect in everything she does. Her Wanda her has all the nuances that she had already shown in WandaVision – and more…
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness There are two post-credits scenes. The final is fun nonsense. But the middle one has the arrival of someone new (I clapped again) who seems to be very important in the story. In the end, the movie is not one of those passionate ones, but it gave me moments of good fun!
