After the controversy over the McPicanha line of the McDonald’s restaurant chain, the public’s eyes became more attentive to other possible disagreements in fast-food advertisements.
With McPicanha, the problem was that the hamburger did not have noble parts of the meat, presenting only a sauce with a picanha aroma. Now, fast-food Burger King has also been put up against the wall with its “Rib Whopper”, which has already changed the name of the snack to “Swine Paleta Whopper”. The company made the change after being notified by Procon.
“Procon has looked with concern at the advertising of foodstuffs in which a certain component that is not part of the main ingredient stands out”, said the director of Procon-SP, Guilherme Farid, in an interview with SBT Brasil.
If it is proven that the consumer was misled, the company can be fined for misleading advertising in more than R$11 million. Advertising for any product must be transparent and truthful. After all, those who buy must know what they are buying.
“When we are talking about food advertising, the composition of the product, the food, is undoubtedly essential information for consumers to make their choice”, observes lawyer Mariana Gondo, from Idec.
