Retailer bets on a marketplace with 250 categories
Twenty-two years after ending its activities in Brazil, Mesbla is now back as a marketplace. Reopened last week in the digital world, the brand brings together 250 categories in its e-commerce, such as electronics, appliances, furniture and toys, among others.
The investment for the resumption of business was R$ 500 thousand. In an interview with CNN Brasil Business, Mesbla’s new CEOs, Ricardo Viana and Marcel Jeronimo, stated that there were no third-party investments.
In addition, Viana told the broadcaster that the license for the exclusive use of the Mesbla name was negotiated and royalties paid.
Mesbla was one of the most important retailers in Brazil in the last century. Its first installation in the country took place on Rua da Assembleia, in downtown Rio de Janeiro, in 1912.
In 1997, with debts of more than R$ 1 billion at the time, the company filed for bankruptcy. In the same year, the shareholding control of Mesbla was acquired by businessman Ricardo Mansur, responsible for the purchase of 51% of the shares.
