A short film by students from Escola Técnica Jornalista Roberto Marinho, located in the south zone of the city of São Paulo, was chosen to be shown at the Short Film Corner, which is part of the Cannes Film Festival.
Goma is a musical fictional short film, where the language of rap is used to tell the story of two young gays and blacks who live on the periphery. The work addresses the different ways of relating to music and rhyme, as well as their importance in the lives of both, bringing up important themes such as LGBTphobia, prejudice and resistance.
The short is about a contradictory society and focuses on the dilemmas of Kid, who finds shelter in rhymes and is played by Daniel Silva, who in addition to being an actor is also a musician and poet (and definitely knows rhymes). The name of the work is related to the action of “returning to your gum”. What are the Kid’s limits? Where does he fit in? What is belonging to him? The production answers all these questions and brings us a mix of sensations that only those who have had the opportunity to watch it are able to understand.
In addition to the screening at the French festival, Goma also won the National University Film Festival Tainha Dourada in the fiction category, in August 2020, which was held online due to the pandemic. It is certainly not for less. Long live Brazilian cinema, national productions and approaches that deal with topics as important as those mentioned above.
