When did the news of the remake of Flames of vengeance, a lot of people thought it was the 2004 Denzel Washington movie. When I said it was the 80’s Drew Barrymore movie, most people didn’t even know it existed. And they still thought I was the uninformed one, lol. So here’s the information. This Flames of vengeance which is premiering in theaters today (19) with Zac Efron, is a remake of the 1984 film with Drew Barrymore and David Keith, based on Stephen King’s book, okay? Nothing to do with Denzel, just the same Brazilian title…
With that said, let’s get to the story. During his college years, Andy (Zac Efron) had participated in an experiment dealing with “Batch 6”, a drug with hallucinogenic effects similar to LSD. The drug gave his future wife Victoria (Sydney Lemmon, TV series) Helstron), telekinetic abilities. Both also developed telepathic abilities. After getting married and having a seemingly normal life, things change with the arrival of their daughter Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong, the Soul of season 6 of American Horror Story). She has an ability to control fire with her mind. As Charlie grows up, her abilities get stronger. That’s when those who did the experiment on her parents decide to go after her.
What did I think of this new one? Flames of vengeance?
I barely remember the original film. But it already started with the girl, who at the time was played by Drew Barrymore, already on the run. It wasn’t a big deal, but it worked. Here, even with the effort of Zac Efron (an increasingly better actor), the same cannot be said. The film is produced by Blumhouse, which has become famous for making cheap movies that give excellent box office returns. But the production here is very poor. Too many close-ups, lack of a script that explains something. It’s all played out, without the slightest care in trying to tell a reasonably followable story.
It’s a shame, because both Zac, Sydney Lemmon, and the girl Ryan Kiera Armstrong struggle. The film even has a scene with Kurtwood Smith, and Gloria Reuben, grimmer than ever. It has a good soundtrack however, by John Carpenter, which deserved a better movie. What really amazes me is why the movie is being released in theaters. It has that streaming movie face. You know, that cheap guy with a well-known actor? You’ll watch it, say it’s bad, and never remember it again. It’s the face of this new one Flames of vengeance.
