A 1955 Mercedes-Benz SLR, a rare Mercedes model, was sold for US$ 142 million, just over 700 million reais. With this, the model becomes the most expensive vehicle in the world according to Hagerty, a company focused on automotive values for collectors.
The money will be used for the so-called Mercedes-Benz Fund, a global scholarship fund, according to an announcement. In the past, the record for the most expensive car belonged to R$345 million, paid in 2018 for a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO.
“Their race cars from the 1930s and 1950s are rare and most are still factory-owned. So anyone that hits the market is in high demand,” said Hagerty’s vice president of automotive intelligence.
Mercedes models like the SLR became rare after the company decided to stop betting on the motorsport sector. So far, the name of the car’s new owner is unknown, but classic car expert Simon Kidston claimed to have made the winning bid on behalf of the owners.
