the 25th of May
The choice of day was not by chance. The 25th of May was chosen because of the premiere of Star Wars: A New Hope, which arrived in American theaters exactly on that day, in 1977. And as it is impossible to talk about nerd culture without mentioning one of the most popular science fiction and fantasy franchises. important in history, the day was chosen to honor the film by George Lucas.
It’s worth remembering that May is an important month for Star Wars in general. In addition to Nerd Pride Day, the so-called Star Wars Day also happens this month, taking advantage of a pun with the main phrase of the franchise (May the force be with you). the towel day
Nerd Pride Day is also known in the community by another name: Towel Day. This term also did not come out of nowhere and is related to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, the renowned book by Douglas Adams. In the work it is said that towels are essential tools in any adventurer’s backpack.
The first Towel Day took place in 2001. However, the original date of the celebration is not on the 25th of May, but on the 11th. Originally this date had nothing to do with nerd culture as a whole, having been made to celebrate the life of the author, who had died a few weeks earlier at the time. Over time, the two celebrations merged into one.
