The Disney Plus streaming platform, despite gaining more and more subscribers and being successful, especially compared to other streaming services, suffers a large loss that adds up to more than four billion reais in the first quarter of the year alone.
The damage is alarming, given that it can cause series and movies scheduled to be released in the next few years to be postponed or even cancelled. For some, it is possible that this loss does not make much sense, precisely because of the high number of subscribers and all the fame that Disney Plus has gained.
The Disney Plus platform unites Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic and pleases tastes of all kinds. If we consider all the group’s platforms together (with The Walt Disney Company being the parent company), the group has more than 200 million subscribers and a turnover of approximately 25 billion if we count January, February and March 2022. Even so , the loss was high and could have serious consequences for the company.
The high loss, in turn, was not only due to the content budget (including channels, movies, series and streaming, for example), but also due to certain contracts. With the arrival of Disney Plus in 2019, some contracts with other services were canceled and, therefore, productions that could be in the platform’s catalogs could no longer be, and some fixed values of these contracts were lost by the company, generating even more loss in multiple senses.
The question remains of what the future of Disney Plus will be like, and which areas will be interfered with by it.
