I perfectly remember the feeling of awe when I saw the first Jurassic Park back in the 90’s. Dinosaurs were perfect and you felt totally transported to that world so unlike anything else. That first film is still relevant and perfect, even so many decades later – it’s available on Paramount Plus and Telecine. Then we had two more sequences (remember that Julianne Moore was in one of them, lol?). Time passed and came a reboot/sequel, with Chris Pratt, with the new name of Jurassic World. It worked, and was followed by Jurassic World – Fallen Kingdom, which, for me, is the weakest of all. Glad to see that the third film of the new phase, Jurassic World: Dominion, recovers. It opens this Thursday in theaters, and is a great gift for fans.
First, the story. It all takes place four years after the events of threatened kingdom. Dinosaurs are spread across the world, some peacefully and others not so much. Meanwhile, the planet’s governments scramble to find ways to contain them. One alternative is to hire tech giant BioSyn, which promises to keep captured dinos in an isolated sanctuary. There they can be studied for medical advances. Only Dr. Ellie Sattler detects a plague of genetically modified locusts destroying crops across the United States. And she decides to start investigating the company. At the same time, Owen and Claire are living in a secluded spot with young Maisie, who is constantly in danger of being discovered.
I found it again Jurassic World?
My tip is to see it again threatened kingdom. He may be the weakest of them all, but it’s important to remember certain things in order to better follow the story of Domain. It is available on Now. Jurassic World: Domain has clear messages: it is pro-animal and against big corporations. The villain – we soon find out – is BioSyn President Lewis Dodgson. Those who are fans even remember that the character appeared there in the first Jurassic Park. He is the one who delivers a fake can of shaving cream to Nedry to store the stolen embryos. Now the character is made by the disappeared Campbell Scott, with a look that makes a parody of great visionaries, like Jeff Bezos. The film manages to balance its important message well (without being boring) with the action and suspense that we expect from a child of Jurassic Park.
Among humans, the group is divided between the new – Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and the great DeWanda Wise – and the classics. What a pleasure to see the trio Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum back. And best of all, with important arcs and stories, not just as a “tribute”. The stories of the two groups run parallel until the big encounter in the final third of Domain. The movie also brings back relevant moments BD Wong (it’s even funny that he’s always there, lol) and Omar Sy. In Jurassic World, he was a mere supporting player, but here he gets an important role, and several action scenes. I loved! They even arrange two scenes for the annoying Justice Smith!
And in the end…
Dinosaurs are still exceptional. There are high suspense scenes – the frozen lake one is great, and also a lot of suspense and action – with all the sequences set in Malta. It even reminded me of 007 movies. But what blew me away the most was the way they paid tribute to the affective memory of all the fans. There’s a certain scene with Laura Dern and a baby dinosaur where she says “It’s always exciting.” Couldn’t be more right.
