Press Day is celebrated on June 1 in Brazil. The date was chosen because it was the day when the Correio Braziliense newspaper, founded by Hipólito José da Costa, began to be published.
But it was not always so. Until 1999, the date was celebrated on September 10, because on this same day in 1808 the first distribution of the Jornal Gazeta in Rio de Janeiro took place, which brought news from the court.
The importance of date
Every worthy form of journalism must fight for equality and justice through the search for the truth. It is in the press that denunciations of the most varied abuses of power occur, transmission of facts in favor of the population and the promotion of free speech and debates that should enrich the public scenario.
Therefore, the press is a fundamental pillar of every democratic country. This “fourth power” is hardly free from attacks or threats, especially in the current Brazilian context, but it must be preserved at all costs by the population and its representatives. Therefore, on May 3, the “International Press Freedom Day“, made official in 1993 by the UN, which seeks to combat censorship and violence against professionals in the area.
