Energy saving is an increasingly important topic, whether for controlling consumer spending, or for sustainability and attention to the environment. With that in mind, Samsung has just made available to Brazilian users of the SmartThings app the Energy functionality, which, 100% free, allows users to explore ways to save on electricity use, in addition to contributing to the reduction of the carbon footprint.
The feature was inspired by how to give users transparency regarding the energy consumption of their air conditioner and works based on everyday electricity usage behavior, with easy monitoring options and, in real time, from some devices. connected¹ from Samsung’s SmartThings ecosystem, such as WindFree air conditioning models.
In the air conditioners of this line, for example, SmartThings Energy adds to other benefits already known, focused on efficiency and economy, such as the Digital Inverter Ultra compressor technology, which maintains the desired temperature without the need to turn it off and on. the appliance several times, with less noise and generating energy savings of up to 77% compared to conventional equipment, in addition to the 10-year warranty on the compressor.
“Among air conditioning sales in Brazil, the proportion of Samsung’s WindFree model increased considerably last year, and should surpass the result this year. This shows that the technological resources of these products have left behind the concern with excessive expenditure of electric energy with their use. Thanks to continuous research and the development of solutions such as SmartThings Energy, today the consumer can obtain a much more efficient and easier experience, without losses in terms of consumption, something very important in this moment of fluctuations in the value of energy tariffs in Brazil”, says Thiago Dias, director of Samsung Brasil’s air conditioning division.
Development of SmartThings Energy
The idea of the functionality came from an insight by Samsung Design Latin America (SDLA) in 2017, whose office is based in São Paulo, after the launch of the first WindFree in Brazil, which allowed measuring energy consumption on the device. Over the years, Samsung Korea created the function and the concept was improved in a partnership between Samsung Design Latin America and Samsung’s Research and Development Center to localize the resource for the Brazilian electricity scenario.
The concept was born from the desire to bring more transparency and power to users over the energy consumption of electronic products, since, in Brazil, if consumers want to obtain this type of information, they will need to look for several different sources, such as the value of kWh at the distributor. of local energy (there are more than 100 throughout the country) and the tax rate applied in the State, in addition to considering variables such as tariff flags, to, only then, make the calculation on their own account of their energy consumption. SmartThings Energy, by itself, can deliver the result of this calculation in real time, in a practical way, as soon as the user includes his product in the SmartThings ecosystem.
The project was first implemented at Samsung’s Head Quarters in Korea, before making its market debut in the US, UK and India. The good results and public acceptance represented the green light for Brazil to be the fifth country to develop its own improved version, now released to the final public. In Latin America, SmartThings Energy should be available for Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Panama soon.
“After several researches to get to know the Brazilian lifestyle in depth, we were sure that this functionality adapted to Brazil and Latin America would represent an unparalleled innovation for users. Our mission is to make life easier for people with our solutions, and today there is nothing like what SmartThings Energy can offer in terms of an insight into energy consumption, it is something with incredible potential to help everyone adopt. more economical and sustainable habits”, says André Tanaka, UX Design manager at SDLA.
How SmartThings Energy works
Among the main differentials, the new Energy functionality of the SmartThings app allows a detailed view of energy consumption, both in Reais and in kWh, in addition to the possibility of creating alerts and showing comparatives to understand how much the connected device consumes at the end of the month.
“Our goal with SmartThings Energy is to empower the consumer, so that they understand in detail how their electronic products work and how much energy they consume to use them wisely, thus obtaining the best value for money. The new functionality gives users a complete and real-time view of each piece of equipment, in addition to helping them in the long term in the decision to maintain or exchange them for more economical and efficient ones”, completes Thiago.
In addition to the integrated intelligence resources, the app’s functionality considers the residence’s zip code to apply the rates of the local energy distributor, including the use of flags, if applicable. To use, it’s easy:
• The first step is to check if the SmartThings app is up to date. Otherwise, just download the update from the smartphone app store;
• Then, just open the SmartThings app and tap the Life button;
• Finally, inform your zip code so that the application identifies your energy distributor and calculates your specific cost per kWh;
• If you have applicable appliances¹, they will appear under the ‘Power’ feature.
In addition to the aforementioned functions, Samsung’s ST Energy feature also allows consumers to program energy usage notifications when they are away from home, in case they leave any device on, in addition to receiving daily usage warnings and setting a monthly goal of consumption, with notifications if exceeded.
The app also gives savings tips that help with conscious use, and shows a detailed report with average consumption per hour during a given period. In addition to Samsung’s air conditioners, the feature is also capable of monitoring models of the brand’s refrigerators, robot vacuums and washing machines and dryers, among others.
