Nike, through FISIA, the brand’s official distributor in Brazil, today announced a commitment to three Brazilian organizations to combat the negative effects of climate change, preserve the environment and promote community development through sport, with a focus on Amazon.
Nike will work with SOS Amazônia, Associação Onçafari and Instituto Esporte & Educação (IEE) to further advance efforts to help protect the planet – and with it – the future of sport. Bruno Teixeira, Senior Purpose Manager at FISIA, comments:
“From extreme weather to poor air quality, athletes* (For Nike, if you have a body, you are an athlete) around the world face climate-related barriers to exercising and playing sport every day”, and adds: “Because of the impacts generated by climate change for athletes and the planet, sustainability is one of Nike’s priorities, for As a result, we set bold, science-based goals to help reduce our environmental impact and also to make kids more active.”
Considered the largest watershed on the planet, the Amazon Rainforest plays an important role in regulating the world’s water and carbon cycles. Studies also show that the region produces about 6% of the world’s oxygen and its preservation guarantees rain for much of the South American continent. By collaborating with partners working to preserve wildlife and forests, Nike wants to contribute to local sustainability efforts, in addition to continuing to build on its history of commitments to promoting access to sport in Brazil.
