Watch Brasil, a content hub that brings together movies, series, linear channels, sports broadcasts, music and educational videos, launches version 3.0 of its platform and announces a strategic partnership with Paramount. The new platform will redefine the experience for Watch Brasil users, increasing the resources and technical capacity of the content hub. In addition, Watch Brasil becomes a commercial distributor of Paramount+ content.
The news corroborates the upward trajectory of Watch Brasil, which underwent a repositioning in December 2021 in order to establish itself as a content hub. According to Maurício Almeida, CEO of Watch Brasil and cofounder:
“We defined a new model, with a win-win relationship for all ends. We generate business for all market players and content producers and bring the best cost-benefit to consumers, in addition to the convenience of being able to have different content in the same place” and he adds:
“We understand that streaming will be the new distribution channel for all types of content, from movies, series, documentaries, stand ups, talk shows and reality to live sporting events, educational material and linear TV channels. This opened up new markets – in addition to functioning as the streaming platform, we became strategic and commercial business partners for companies like Paramount and Newco.”
Partnership with Paramount aims to expand new business
The Watch Brasil platform will be responsible for marketing new Paramount+ packages to most ISPs. The company was chosen, among other things, for the quality of the transmission of the platform and the experience offered to the end user. “We have complete confidence in the quality of delivery and the security of the Watch Brasil platform. Technological robustness was a key factor in this decision. The partnership between Watch and Paramount+ has been strong since the startup’s launch – which, incidentally, took place in a Paramount office. We know that new Paramount+ customers will have excellent service and service with Watch”, says Rogério Francis, vice president of Paramount in Brazil.
Watch Brasil was born with the performance prerequisite for a good experience, added to the safety and quality of the technology. “Content has always been hosted on the Content Delivery Network [CDN] from Akamai, a server that several providers already have in their infrastructure, which makes the performance within the ISP’s network excellent”, explains Almeida. “In terms of technology, we have the same technology used by global players. From the CDN, where the movies are stored, to the DRM, which takes care of anti-piracy security, we use the exact same technology and software infrastructure that Hollywood studios like Paramount use for their worldwide solutions. Our technology provider is Kaltura, an Israeli company based in New York and shares on Nasdaq”, adds the CEO.
Watch Brasil brings performance and diversity of options to the end user for an incredible streaming experience on any device with the best cost-benefit on the market. To studios and TVs, the platform generates new customers, according to Almeida: “We bring to the millions of subscribers of regional providers [ISPs] the content produced by Hollywood, with the robust technological security and piracy proof. We help ISPs – entrepreneurs who are internet providers, a market that has doubled in size since 2018 [data do lançamento da Watch], from 9,000 to over 18,000 companies – to have a competitive edge and be able to offer content from the latest Hollywood releases. What’s more, Watch Brasil is the partner for creating streamings, as is the case with UOL Play and Vero Play.
Combo possibilities on the Watch platform
In March of this year, Watch Brasil received a contribution of R$ 28 million from Bertha Capital, Multilaser’s CVC (Corporate Venture Capital) manager, which became an investing partner in the startup. Watch Brasil has been growing rapidly since its launch in 2018: in 2020 it recorded almost R$10 million in revenue, and in 2021 it exceeded R$17 million. In terms of subscribers, the company grew 150% from 2020 to 2021 and expects to reach a 400% increase in 2022.
In this expansion process, the company opened an office in Manaus (AM), reinforced its commercial service team in all regions of Brazil and further expanded its portfolio to consolidate itself as the most complete and diverse on the market. Since the beginning of the year, the company has also invested in technological advancement and is now launching version 3.0. Maurício Almeida comments:
“Among the main differentials offered are the exclusive possibilities for B2B of personalization in services of contents according to the package purchased by the consumer. To speed up development and make the construction of the interface more flexible, we created a componentization pattern, with a central library of components that allows you to create customizable and quickly updated interfaces. Some UI Patterns [UI] were created to facilitate the management and control of content publications in relation to the front-end.”
Watch Brasil offers streaming services directly to providers and also enables partners to create specific services, such as the UOL Play and Vero Play offer, both driven and enabled by the startup’s technological platform. “The new platform also focuses on an artificial intelligence solution for building content carousels automatically, according to consumption patterns and user profiles. For products sold separately, we will have a dedicated carousel, in which users will be able to access products that can be added to their subscriptions, such as HBO and DirectTV Go, among others”, says the CEO of Watch Brasil.
Currently, Watch offers titles from Paramount+, MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Universal, and Warner, among others. In the national market, it has a strong partnership with Medialand. In the marketplace, the company has packages such as HBO Max, UOL Leia + Banca and a package with more than 50 linear channels that includes Band, Band Sports, Band News, Terra Viva, Cultura, Record, Record News, Rede TV, SBT, Arte1, Agro1, Smithsonian Channel, Fish TV and CNN Brasil. Watch Brasil also broadcasts sporting events, in partnership with NSports, and has a musical score with Stingray.
