In the last few weeks I’ve been lucky enough to discover great series on streaming. On Disney Plus, there were Obi-Wan Kenobi e Ms Marvel (this one still has a few episodes to premiere). On Apple TV had The Essex Serpent, which mixes drama and fantasy, with Claire Danes. And now, in two sittings, I’ve watched The Summer That Changed My Life. The seven-episode first season is complete on Amazon Prime Video. And a second one was already approved even before the first one debuted.
The series is based on the first book in Jenny Han’s trilogy, the same as To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Tells Belly’s story. She, her mother and brother always spend the summer at the Fisher family’s beach house. Over the years, she has grown very close to Conrad and Jeremiah, the Fishers’ two sons. It’s just that Conrad is her first love, but he’s never paid attention to her. But now, with Belly about to turn 16, things are different. At the same time, the two mothers, Laurel and Susannah, also face moments of decision in their lives.
What did I think of the series?
I haven’t read the books, but as far as I know the series takes a lot of liberties with the text, especially the whole debutante ball arc. But that doesn’t matter, the spirit of Jenny Han’s stories is present. And soon you’re completely immersed in the stories, feeling like part of the family. The beach where the summer house is located is another character. Makes you want to go there, hang out with all of them. The characters are not perfect, they make a lot of mistakes, as Lina herself says at one point. But that’s life, isn’t it?
As is normal for someone her age, Lina has a huge crush on Conrad. Any girl that age would fall in love with him, she promises with her eyes, but then disappears. #who ever, lol? But that doesn’t stop her from giving a chance to other boys who are enchanted by her. Just as it doesn’t stop one of the boys who falls in love with her from having both boys and girls. And everything is done without drama, everyone accepts everyone’s choices.
In addition to Lina’s romantic back-and-forth, the series still has great moments depicting the two mothers’ friendship and desires. This includes having sex, kissing, and hanging out like old times. It’s nice to see there’s room for everyone.
The cast is all great. The actress who plays Lina, Lola Tung (making her Hollywood debut), has a charming light. She reacts perfectly to dramatic, romantic situations, as well as friendships with other girls. There are no villains in The Summer That Changed My Life. Just people who get it wrong and get it right. As in life. I loved! Eagerly awaiting the second season.
