The size of a company can have a big impact on the work experience it creates for the people it employs. When you are looking for your dream career, choosing between a small or large company can bring up several doubts about which one can bring more opportunities for career advancement and benefits.
Felipe Calbucci, Indeed’s Brazil sales director, says that both large and small companies have their pros and cons, so it’s good to consider the skill set that can help you thrive in a given company. “Sometimes the small size of a company can make it easier for management to notice employees and their skill set, which makes it possible for them to help employees evolve and improve every skill they have,” said the director of sales.
In general, small and medium-sized companies play an important role in the economy, as there are more SMEs in the world than large companies. “This means that small and medium-sized companies are responsible for employing a lot of people”, explains Calbucci.
In a recent survey conducted by Indeed, the number 1 job site in the world, with more than 700 decision makers in Brazilian small and medium companies, 46% said they intend to hire more people in the next 12 months. With that in mind, Indeed has compiled 3 top advantages candidates can have when choosing an SME to develop their careers.
1. Flexibility
Small or medium-sized businesses may have a greater ability to offer more flexibility in many ways. Size can help streamline decision-making and communication processes. This means that a company of this size can promote change more quickly and efficiently, whether for specific project goals or processes, or even for major company policies.
In addition, SMEs can also offer more flexibility to employees, such as flexible hours, remote work options, dress codecasual, among other benefits. In fact, in Indeed’s survey of SMEs, when asked what they are offering employees in order to remain competitive with large companies, 47% of decision makers said they are offering remote work and flexible working hours.
2. Professional development
Contrary to what people might think, professional development and career advancement may be easier to achieve in a smaller company. And that’s because people who work for an SME can work closer to leadership and management than those who work for a large company. Calbucci explains that, for example, a new hire at a small or medium-sized company may be more likely to meet and work directly with the company’s director.
“This can allow them to acquire new skills and knowledge directly from experienced professionals, and it can also improve their understanding of what these professionals do for the company on a day-to-day basis.”
SME companies are also not necessarily behind when it comes to investing in advancement opportunities for their employees. Indeed research showed that 32% of respondents offer advancement opportunities, such as reimbursement for courses, lectures and seminars.
3. Company culture and mission
A strong corporate culture is one in which individuals feel respected, valued and comfortable. While some large companies may develop their own brand of corporate culture, smaller companies have more opportunities to foster a business culture and community that aligns with value systems and truly includes all members of the organization. According to the sales director, an SME, in general, offers a different atmosphere or culture from large companies. “A smaller company may be better able to adapt to employee needs and offer a more varied workday with more opportunities to develop their skills,” he said.
Working for a small or medium-sized company can also help an employee feel closer to the company’s mission. The value the company adds to the world may, in fact, be one of the reasons why a person might choose to work there. When the company is smaller, it can be easier to see how your work directly contributes to helping fulfill that mission. Felipe Calbucci concluded:
“This helps the employee feel fulfilled by their work and satisfied with their position within the company.”
