Of course, since yesterday, everyone’s been talking about – anyway – Bennifer’s wedding. Twenty years after their first engagement, after marriages to others, and children, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck were married at Little White Wedding Chapel. Yes, the same place where so many celebrities have gotten married in Las Vegas. It is quite clear that the two never stopped being in love. But, like so many, they ended up following other paths, only they grabbed the chance to try. Whether it works or not doesn’t matter. What matters is today, giving a chance to fate, which brought them face to face again.
Jennifer had two dresses for the moment. An old one, which she kept for a long time, and decided to use on the big day. The other, a strapless one from Zuhair Murad. Ben wore a white tuxedo he already had in his wardrobe. As far as is known, Ben’s three children and Jennifer’s two children attended the ceremony.
In her newsletter, which is sent to all fans – it arrived for me at 6:37 pm on Sunday – Jennifer described the experience, titled We Married! And she ends up signing as Jennifer Lynn Affleck.
We Married, by Jennifer Lynn Affleck
We got married. Love is beautiful. Love is good. And love is also patient. Patient for 20 years.
Exactly what we wanted. Last night we flew to Vegas, stood in line to get the license with four other couples. All making the same journey to the wedding capital of the world. Behind us, two men were holding hands and each other. In front of us was a young couple who had taken a three-hour drive from Victorville on their daughter’s two-year-old birthday. We all wanted the same thing. That the world would recognize us as partners and declare our love through this ancient and almost universal symbol of marriage.
We barely made it to Little White Wedding Chappel before midnight. They gracefully stayed open until a little after that. They let us take pictures in the pink Cadillac convertible, evidently used by the King. But if we wanted Elvis to show up it would cost extra. And he was already in bed.
The description
So, with the best witnesses we could have imagined, a dress from an old movie, and a tuxedo from Ben’s wardrobe, we read our vows in the small chapel. And we gave each other the rings we will wear for the rest of our lives. They even had bluetooth for a (small) march to walk in the chapel aisle. But in the end, it was the best possible wedding we could have imagined. One we’ve dreamed of for a long time, and made real (in the eyes of the Las Vegas law, a pink convertible, and the two of us) at last.
When love is true, the only thing that matters in one marriage is the other. And also the promise to love, care, understand, be patient, loving and kind to each other. We had it. And much more. Best night of our lives. Thanks to Little White Wedding Chapel for letting me use the break room to change while Ben used the men’s room.
They were right when they said that “all you need is love”. We are so grateful to have an abundant, wonderful new family of five fantastic children. And a life we’ve never had more reason to live. Wait long enough, and maybe you’ll find yourself having the time of your life crossing a Las Vegas boulevard at 12:30 in the tunnel of love. With your kids and the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. Love is a great thing, perhaps the best of things – and it is worth waiting for.
and the next day
Nothing like a happy face from a goal achieved. The morning after the wedding, Jennifer posted this photo on her Instagram. Congratulations to both!
