Madame Web, the film project’s status as “essentially Sony’s version of Doctor Strange” has been moved to October 6, 2023 – three full months after the previously announced date of July 2023. Additionally, a Sony and The currently untitled Marvel Universe, originally scheduled for October 6, 2023, has been pushed back to June 7, 2024. International website Variety was one of the first to release the information.
Madame Web is one of the top names among Sony-produced spin-offs related to the Spider-Man universe, with the cast including the newly added Adam Scott (Severance, Parks and Recreation) alongside Dakota Johnson (The Peanut Butter Falcon, The Social Network), Emma Roberts (American Horror Story: Apocalypse) and Sydney Sweeney (The White Lotus, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). SJ Clarkson (Succession, Dexter) will direct from a screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Morbius).
Since 2019, Sony has been talking about making a Madame Web movie, and the project is positioned as “essentially Sony’s version of Doctor Strange.” In Marvel Comics, Madame Web is an elderly precognitive mutant, telepathic and confined to a hospital bed surrounded by life support machines that resemble a spider’s web. Her mutant abilities make her a strong ally of Peter Parker, though she never fights villains for obvious reasons.
As for the untitled film, there are just under two full years left until this text was written. Not much is known about the project, other than the fact that it is in development.
Sony is also moving forward on another long-running Spider-Man project, Kraven the Hunter. Earlier this year, Russell Crowe joined the film in an undisclosed role. Kraven the Hunter is scheduled to hit theaters on January 13, 2023.
